NCC Mule Deer Habitat Restoration Volunteer

Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, is
recruiting four (4) Nevada Conservation Corps members to install
approximately 2,000 perennial trees and shrubs, irrigation, deer fencing,
and deer netting. To further aid the progress of this restoration project,
NCC volunteers will assist other GBI employees in mapping the site contours
using laser levels, preparing the site for reseeding, and implementing soil
restoration techniques which utilize activated aerobic compost extracts.
Volunteers will also assist in the removal of old fencing and some noxious
weeds.

Location and Timeline:
o Reno, NV
o September 6, 2011 – November 21, 2011

Compensation:
This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend
of $3,500 for the season. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid
to members every other week throughout the service term. Upon completion of
AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional education award in
the amount of $1,468 that can be used for paying off student loans, or
paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

Qualifications:
o The successful candidates will possess interest in botany and plant
identification;
o Ability to self-direct and self-motivate;
o Tolerant of working in variable weather conditions, willing and able to
work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and on uneven terrain;
o Ability to work productively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals
and follow safe working practices; and
o Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award
(limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of two full-time terms of
service), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and
federal criminal background checks.
