Position (50%) available for biologist at the interface between Conservation and Landscape Architecture

We offer a Position at the Technische Universität München (TUM) subject to the final funding decision by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection, within the interdisciplinary project Animal-Aided Design® that aims at improving landscape architecture by including animals in the design of open space planning in cities.

The basic idea of Animal-Aided Design® (AAD) is to include the presence of animals in the planning process of a public open space, such that they become an integral part of the design. For AAD, the desired species are chosen at the beginning of a planning project, and the requirements of the target species then set boundary conditions and serve as an inspiration for the design. The aim of AAD is to establish a stable population at the project site. Thus, the project aims at designing greenspace, mainly in cities, that improve the living conditions of both animals and humans.

We search for a person interested in conservation and with a strong background in natural history. The successful candidate will work together with a landscape architect in the design of a number of public open spaces. Candidates are required to have a M.Sc. in Biology, Conservation, Landscape Planning or a related subject with appropriate specialisation. We expect the candidates to have good communication skills and the ability to work in a team. The ability to read, speak and write in English and German is a requirement.

The project is a cooperation between Prof. Wolfgang W. Weisser, Terrestrial Ecology Research Group (www.toek.wzw.tum.de) and Dr. Thomas Hauck (Open space planning, University of Kassel). Application is via email only and should include a cover letter including a short statement of research interests, a Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications, and names and email-addresses for two references, in a single pdf document.

The position is available from 1.9.2014 or the earliest possible date thereafter and funding will be initially one year with the possibility of extension. Application deadline is Tuesday, 12.8.2014. Salaries will be paid in accordance with German regulations for public sector employees salary level TVL E13.
