13 PhD in cancer (Germany)

Skin Cancer is an increasing health issue world-wide due to environmental factors and the aging population. Much enthusiasm has been raised recently in the field of dermato-oncology with the advent of novel highly effective treatment options for metastatic malignant melanoma and epithelial skin cancers. Despite this progress, dermato-oncology is still an under-developed field.

RTG 2099 “Hallmarks of Skin Cancer” is a joint effort of Heidelberg University and of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and it is financially supported by the German Research Community (DFG).
RTG 2099 supports basic research in different areas of skin cancer biology including cancer cell dissemination, primary resistance, and identification of novel therapeutic targets. Special emphasis is directed in 13 projects towards cancer stem cells and signaling pathways, invasion and vascular mechanisms of metastasis, resistance to apoptosis, and the development of novel immunotherapeutic approaches.

RTG 2099 strives to attract and train the next generation of leaders in dermato-oncology. The educational program includes basic teaching offers in general molecular and cellular biology, and in cancer biology and general oncology, and special offers in skin cancer biology and dermato-oncology. The program is jointly offered by the graduate schools of the life sciences of Heidelberg University (HBIGS) and of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ/HIGS); special training in skin cancer biology and dermato-oncology is provided by the RTG 2099.

As science is international, RTG 2099 collaborates with partners at the University of London, especially King’s College, Queen Mary University, UCL and ICR, as well as with Cancer Research, UK, London Research Institute. For the PhD and MD students in the RTG, a lab visit in London (6 weeks to 6 months) is mandatory.
