Research Training Scholarship in animal welfare (UK)

The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) is inviting applications for a Research Training Scholarship to enable a promising graduate to undertake a novel programme of scientific research in animal welfare leading to a degree at the doctoral level (PhD or equivalent). The award covers the costs of a studentship up to a maximum value of £100,000.

Applications will be accepted from potential supervisors at the following institutions:
•   Institutions within the British Isles which can grant a doctoral degree
•   Institutions outside the British Isles which can grant a doctoral degree and which have a UFAW LINK (see www.ufaw.org.uk for details).

We would particularly like to encourage applications in the following areas:
·      development of approaches to eliminate or alleviate significant welfare problems in farmed animals
·      development of methodologies aimed at elucidation of the neurological basis of sentience in animals
·      development of methods of welfare / quality of life assessment, including detection and alleviation of pain, distress and cumulative lifetime experience
·      development of methods for humane pest control
·      research aimed at improving the welfare of fish – especially those farmed or caught for food.

Applications in other areas of animal welfare science are also welcome.

Initial concept note applications should be made on the form available at www.ufaw.org.uk. Deadline for concept notes: 20th November 2015.

We hope that this may be of interest.
