2 PhD fellowships in ecosystem modelling (Portugal)

Research fellowship “Earth observation and ecosystem models”

A call is open to award 2 Research Fellowships under the project “Ecopotential: improving future ecosystem benefits through earth observations”, ref. nº641762-2, funded by the European Union in the scope of the H2020 Program, H2020-SC5-2014-two-stage, under the following conditions:

Admission requirements:

Candidates will be admitted to the call when demonstrating: (i) a PhD degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences or Computer Sciences; (ii) experience in the use and analysis of earth observation data; (iii) experience in development or application of ecosystem or biodiversity models. A solid record of scientific publication, previous experience with process-based models, and previous research on ecosystem functions and services will be additional evaluation criteria. The successful candidate(s) should be proficient in English and demonstrate solid experience in dissemination of scientific results.

Work plan:

The research fellow will collaborate with other team members in the development or adaptation of ecosystem models assimilating earth observation data. This will involve the collection and processing of earth observation and ancillary data, the development or adaptation of ecosystem models to the project study sites, the collection and analysis of in-field data for model calibration or validation, and the preparation of scientific manuscripts.

Legislation applicable:

Law No. 40/2004, of 18th of August (Research Fellowship Holder Statute); FCT Regulation for Studentships and Fellowships (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2015.pdf) and ICETA’s Research Fellowship Holder Statute aproved by FCT.

Work place:

The work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO headquarters, at Vairão, Vila do Conde, Portugal. In-field surveys will mainly be conducted in Northern Portugal.

Duration of the fellowship:

The fellowships will have a duration of 12 months, starting in March 18th, 2016. The fellowships may be renewed for an additional 12 month period.

Salary:

Monthly stipend is €1495 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis.

Selection criteria:

The ranking of candidates will result of a global appreciation of the Curriculum vitae (50%) and the quality of the motivation letter (20%), followed by an interview (30%). The Jury might decide not to award the fellowships if the profiles of the candidates do not meet the required qualifications and experience.

Publicity and communication of results:

The ranking of the candidates will be published at a visible and public area of ICETA facilities, and all candidates will be informed about the result of their application by email.
