The project for this position will entail both field and laboratory experiments aimed to better understand if, and how, Caribbean corals can acclimatize and adapt to thermal stress, ocean acidification, and other stressors, utilizing both traditional and ‘omics based tools to help characterize the mechanisms of this adaptation. This research will complement and leverage ongoing ACCRETE projects and personnel. Experience with small boats and AAUS SCUBA diving certification are desirable, but not required. Preference will be given to candidates with: 1) an exemplary track record of peer-reviewed publications, 2) demonstrated experience with emerging techniques of DNA and RNA Next-Generation-Sequencing Analysis, such as characterization of community metagenomics and transcriptome-wide gene expression; to garner a holistic understanding of the host, symbiont, and microbiome’s role in coral resistance and resilience to climate change and other stressors, and 3) experience maintaining corals or other marine organisms in aquaria and conducting laboratory studies on climate change and ocean acidification impacts.
