Editor in Chief for The Auk: Ornithological Advances

The American Ornithological Society (AOS) seeks a new Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for the journal, The Auk: Ornithological Advances. The Auk is an international, peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research advancing the fundamental scientific knowledge of broad biological concepts (e.g., ecology, evolution, behavior, physiology, and genetics) through studies of birds. The Auk receives ~300 submissions per year and publishes articles online weekly. The Auk has the top 5-yr-average Journal Impact Factor score among ornithology journals worldwide.
The EIC of The Auk serves as the chief scientific authority responsible for the process and output of top-quality peer reviewed articles in the journal and for assembling and overseeing a diverse editorial board. The EIC determines the scope and direction of the scientific content of the journal, and aids the society in developing new policies responsive to changing publishing needs. The successful applicant will be a senior academic or research scientist with five or more years of cumulative hands-on editorial (associate editor or above) experience with general or subject specific peer reviewed journals drawing international audiences. We seek applicants who have demonstrated their ability to lead and mentor teams of fellow scientists and their commitment to supporting individual diversity and inclusivity in our field.
The term of the initial appointment is one year with annual reappointment subject to AOS governing Council’s approval. We aim to select the new EIC by December 2017 to allow a ~3 month overlap and transition period prior to the end of the current EIC’s term in April 2018.
A five-member Search Committee comprised of co-chairs Alice Boyle and Kimberly Smith, Daniel Cadena, Andrea Townsend, and Jim Sedinger, will conduct the search on behalf of AOS’ governing Council. The Search Committee welcomes both direct applications and nominations for the position. All nominees will be contacted by the Search Committee. Additional information, including a full position profile, may be found here: Full Position Description Editor-in-Chief The Auk 2017. If you would like to contact the committee directly, please email jobs@americanornithology.org.

Formal applications, consisting of a letter of interest and curriculum vitae, should be sent electronically to: Jobs@americanornithology.org. The closing date for receipt of applications is 1 November 2017.

The American Ornithological Society is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We seek and welcome a diverse pool of candidates in this search. Applications received by November 1, 2017, will be assured full consideration.
