Tanzania People & Wildlife (TPW) is a Tanzanian nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and important natural habitats through a community-based approach. TPW helps rural communities develop their skills and abilities to protect natural resources in a manner that maximizes their benefits from these landscapes while also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing the critical importance of community-led initiatives, the organization provides information, training, and service level support to its rural constituencies to strengthen local institutions and community-driven actions for natural resource management and wildlife conservation.

TPW operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in northern Tanzania. Sharing a boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional headquarters as well as an educational center where rural community members improve their understanding of the environment and develop hands-on skills in natural resource management. From this center, TPW operates programs in four major programmatic areas: (1) human-wildlife conflict prevention, (2) youth environmental education and adult capacity building & training, (3) natural resource conservation and rangeland management, and (4) environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

TPW is looking for an energetic, creative, experienced, and self-reliant individual to privately teach kindergarten for the directors’ five-year old daughter and serve as a Conservation Intern at their remote headquarters and home, the Noloholo Environmental Center. Parents with similarly aged children are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have experience teaching pre-K, Kindergarten and/or elementary school, a background in environment and/or conservation, and an interest in adapting their knowledge for rural Tanzanian projects. The ability to independently develop and implement teaching curricula for a youngster is a must with an emphasis on reading, creative learning, and play. Teaching comprises about 2/3rds of this position’s time, with 4-5 hours of instruction in the morning (M-F), and 3-5 hours a week for planning, classroom maintenance, and keeping track of student progress.

This position will also spend 1/3 of their time supporting TPW’s conservation initiatives such as:

Environmental Education: Wildlife Clubs, Environmental Camps, National Park Study Tours, and more for rural Tanzanian Youth (particularly in terms of development and preparation of key curricula, materials and activities for wildlife club activities; involvement in this initiative will be emphasized given expectations of a candidate with a background in education/environmental education).

Wildlife and Rangeland Monitoring: Participating in game counts, camera-trap monitoring, and rangeland activities

Program Evaluation and Building Staff Capacity: Assisting staff with technology and professional skills, proof reading reports, and other areas where support is needed

Hosting: Orienting occasional visitors, such as student groups and donors, to the Environmental Center

The successful candidate will have impressive communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with diverse stakeholders. Stationed at the Noloholo Environmental Center in northern Tanzania, the candidate should be willing to work in remote areas for the majority of the time.


The successful individual will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in education, natural resource management, conservation, or a closely related field. Demonstration of considerable experience teaching pre-K, Kindergarten, or elementary school is an essential requirement.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in one of the above fields (candidates with a Master’s degree may be given preference);
Considerable experience and passion for teaching youngsters (particularly to read) and confidence in independently implementing a 1 on 1 learning program. Experience with Montessori curricula is a plus;
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including respect for other cultures;
Willingness and ability to live in a remote setting;
Ability to speak Swahili and experience living abroad is not required but preferred;
Passionate concern for big cats, local communities, and TPW’s mission.

Reports to: TPW Chief Program Officer

Stipend & Benefits: 18-month initial commitment with option to extend; monthly stipend based on organizational policies and individual experience; basic housing and food provided onsite.

Hiring Timeline: We will be accepting applications on a rolling basis, and may schedule in-person interviews with top candidates in the U.S. in May/June 2018. The position would ideally begin in mid May or June 2018.

An 18-month commitment is vital to this position in order to develop a relationship with the kindergarten student and to receive training in our conservation programs. Please explain how and why you are capable and interested in this length of commitment.
