Vacancy for an Advice and Data Analyst
We are currently in search of a talented Advice and Data Analyst to join the ICES Secretariat Advisory services team based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

​​​​The Advice team comprises 16 staff members who support the delivery of advisory products from single fish stocks to multi-species and mixed fisheries advice. The team works with the Advisory Committee and the wider ICES community in order to fulfil the requests for scientific advisory services provided by our organization.


We seek a full time analyst to strengthen the technical and scientific output of ICES work by developing an existing proof of concept of online and connected advice outputs, underpinned by ICES data management systems, into an operational tool for our community of scientists. This role involves close collaboration with both in-house experts in management advice provision, data and software services, as well as national institute experts dealing with the provision of management advice. The role will report to the Head of Advisory Support.


A vocational or educational background related to statistics and/or biology/science with a capacity for data automation are an essential aspect of this role, as how to understand and present the outputs is as important as underlying technical skills in this position.

​Key responsibilities:


Develop scripts to connect and pull outputs from a range of ICES data and advice databases and systems

Create a coherent suite of web based outputs for displaying advice and data outputs, under supervision of the advice professional

Further develop and support existing advice and data outputs, such as Transparent Assessment Framework, Fisheries Overviews and Stock Assessment Graphs, to deliver content into the new web based outputs

Actively participating in different project teams through a range of project management tools

Contributing to reports, expert group meetings and presentations as required​

Required competences and experience:

  • University degree in a science, computer scicence or statistics related subject, or equivalent vocational experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Excellent knowledge of R, capacity to create, run and debug scripts and packages, but also additional programming skills/languages are highly desirable.
  • Good knowledge of web based interfaces, such as ShinyApps or equivalent.
  • Good knowledge of collaborative working tools, SharePoint or similar and Github.
  • A team player, but capable of working independently with little supervision
  • A high level of computer competence, knowledge of databases and related software tools and services
  • Proactive problem solving and communication
  • Methodical approach, i.e. managing tasks, priorities and responsibilities


Terms of appointment

The appointment will be full-time, for starting in February 2021, or as soon as possible.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salary for this role is situated at the “C7" grade which is exempt from Danish income tax and is based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system. A tax-free pension scheme is available.

The ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions and principles of employment and the responsibilities of the staff of the ICES Secretariat.
