3-year postdoc position in insect systematics/phylogenetic diversity

A 3-year postdoc position is open at The University of Hong Kong for a joint position in the Insect Biodiversity and Biogeography Laboratory of Dr. Benoit Guénard (https://benoitguenard.wordpress.com/) and the laboratory of Dr. Tommy Lam from the School of Public Health (https://sph.hku.hk/en/Biography/Lam-Tsan-Yuk-Tommy).

During this period, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop her/his own research projects in collaboration with the PIs and their teams with a focus on questions related to phylogenetic diversity, community assembly, systematics or genomics of insects, preferentially using mosquitos and ants as study systems.

Applicants should hold a PhD in ecology, entomology, systematics, zoology or a related field. The candidate should demonstrate excellent track record of carrying independent research with strong publications. The candidate is also expected to mentor junior teammates such as postgraduate students and undergraduate interns.

Applicants must submit their application to both Dr. Guénard (bguenard@hku.hk) and Dr. Lam (ttylam@hku.hk) including their CV, two representative publications, motivation letter and a short outline of a research proposal (1 page). Review of applications will start immediately, so interested candidates are encouraged to send their applications as soon as possible.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until February 28, 2021, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier. For inquiry about the job duty, salary range and benefit (e.g. medical) of the package, please contact Dr. Guénard.

The University of Hong Kong is located on Hong Kong Islands, at the core of an international and vibrant metropolis with English being the primary language used within the University and in many parts of the city. Hong Kong has a relatively low tax rate and high-quality medical and healthcare system.

Two educator positions

The Hong Kong Biodiversity Museum and the Insect Biodiversity and Biogeography Laboratory (IBBL https://benoitguenard.wordpress.com/) of HKU are looking for two motivated and talented individuals to work as biodiversity educators / ecoleaders.
The first position will consist in organizing and leading courses and guided tours to present the diversity and ecology of arthropods in Hong Kong. This program organized in partnership with the Nature Discovery Park of K11 Musea includes regular insect surveys on roof top, preparation of educational material for both online and in person courses, and the organization of guided entomological tours. The successful candidate should have a strong experience and knowledge in entomology, with additional skills in education or online material creation seen as beneficial for the position. A competitive salary is offered with the position open from April 1st to December 31st 2021 (9 months). Possibility for extension to be discussed at a later date.
The second position will consist in organizing visits and tours of the Hong Kong Biodiversity Museum, engage with a community of followers and visitors online via social media by providing educational material on biodiversity, develop new ecological and conservation information to be added on specimens within the museum, as well as other educational tasks related to the Biodiversity Museum such as supervising a small team of volunteers. The successful candidate should have a strong experience, interest and knowledge in zoology. Previous experience in creating online material and using social media efficiently will be considered positively. A competitive salary is offered with the position open from the Spring 2021 (April-May) and for a period of 18 months.

Both jobs are offered as full time positions and require a Bachelor degree in biology, ecology or related field, as well as excellent skills to speak and write in both English and Cantonese. Both positions include occasional work on weekends (either Saturday or Sunday).

To apply, interested candidates should contact Dr. Benoit Guénard (zeroben@gmail.com) at the earliest convenience including a motivation letter demonstrating the skills of the applicant and a CV. Applicants should indicate which position they are interested in applying.
PhD positions available!

Applicants should have a strong background in ecology, entomology or a related field, with previous research and field experience preferred, and with good analytical skills. Students with high motivation to work within tropical Asian regions are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates should be hard-working, critical thinkers and independent (but keen to work with a team of researchers). Applicants should note that to be accepted within the Graduate Program of the University of Hong Kong, demonstration of academic excellence during undergraduate studies (high GPA) is a requirement.

Potential to develop fieldwork in South-East Asia, including within Hong Kong during the PhD program exists. The geographic position and history of Hong Kong provide great opportunities for the study of community ecology, biological invasions and functional diversity in ants.

Application, including CV, motivation letter, publication (if any) and a list of 2 references should be sent to Dr Benoit Guénard (https://benoitguenard.wordpress.com/) before November 10th 2020.
