Five positions (2.5-year positions with possibilities of extension) are available at the new Balearic Centre for Biodiversity of the University of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Centre for Biodiversity will be devoted to: 1) the generation, management and maintenance of reference natural history collections, 2) the implementation of thegenomic laboratory; and 3) the generation, maintenance and management of geophysical, environmental, genetic and genomic metadata. The data stored in this Centre provides detailed information about biodiversity on a regional scale and will make it accessible to the scientific, political, administrative, industrial, social and educational communities.

Among the activities promoted at the Centre, training in biosystematics for the scientific community will be reinforced (understood as the integrative discipline that studies the diversity of life, and citizen science activities). The establishment of synergies and strategic collaborations with agencies at regional, national and international levels will also be promoted. We expect that the successful candidates will contribute to the establishment and development of the Centre as a reference in biodiversity studies, offering multidisciplinary services to the scientific community at regional and national levels and being a solid partner in international initiatives.

Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of English and Spanish as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in one of them, he/she will be expected to learn it within two years, to be able to participate in all functions that the position may involve.

Positions available at the new Centre for Biodiversity, UIB

Five positions (2.5-year positions with possibilities of extension) are available at the new Balearic Centre for Biodiversity of the University of the Balearic Islands. This is a new initiative funded by the National and Balearic Governments and expected to start operations next fall. The Balearic Centre for Biodiversity, conceived as a scientific- technical support service for UIB research groups, research institutions, government managers, and the private sector, will generate biodiversity knowledge, will be responsible of the curation of reference collections and data and will allow to establish management tools and formulate strategies for the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. 
The Balearic Centre for Biodiversity will be devoted to: 
1) the generation, management and maintenance of reference natural history collections
2) the implementation of the genomic laboratory; and 
3) the generation, maintenance and management of geophysical, environmental, genetic and genomic metadata. JOB DESCRIPTIONS

1) PROJECT MANAGER
We are looking for an enthusiastic, competent and inspiring early career scientist (with a PhD and preferably postdoctoral experience) with excellent team building, leading and negotiation skills. The project manager will be co-responsible for all aspects of the Balearic Centre for Biodiversity and should plan, manage, execute and oversee the different activities run in the Centre (curation of natural history collections, storage and curation of genomic and meta-data, running of the genomic platform, training and outreach activities, etc.). The project manager will be also responsible for a team and able to delegate and coordinate tasks. The project manager will specifically be responsible for: Coordination and technical supervision of other employees of the Balearic Biodiversity Centre. Coordination of the adaptation of laboratory and collection spaces, acquisition and supervision of infrastructure and equipment for the Baearic Biodiversity Center Coordination, management and supervision of the different components of the activities run by the Centre. Management and oversee of budgets and purchases (together with administrative staff) and writing of proposals and internal documents. Ensure the participation of the Centre and coordination of activities and tasks in international platform and networks inc. EBP, ERGA, CBP (Biogenome), GBIF; etc... Coordination and management of results, collections and data produced by the Biodiversity Projects launched during 2022-2025.

Qualification requirements and competences
Applicants must document research excellence, including a PhD in a relevant field and a record of publications in refereed international journals or with highly-respected book publishers. Prior experience leading research projects, as well as a track record of national and international collaborations, will be taken into account.
Personal suitability for the position will also be assessed. It is essential that applicants can demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills, adaptability and capacity to upfront challenges.

We offer
Salary 50.000-55.000 € per annum (gross amount before social security costs and taxes) depending on qualifications and experience.
In addition, there will be a single payment of a maximum of 2000 € for travel expenses for a one-way trip from the center of origin to the reception center.
The person appointed will have 10% research time and a grant of 10.000 € will be awarded, additional to the salary, to promote their research. An academically stimulating environment. 2) GENOMIC LAB MANAGER
We are looking for a competent and highly skilled genomic scientist or technician (with a PhD in Molecular Biology or similar or demonstrated proficiency in the lab methods and techniques) able to equip, run and provide excellent next-generation sequencing (NGS) services, particularly on long fragments (> 50 kb). The Genomic Lab will be equipped with sequencers and instrumentation for sequencing library production including robots for automation of protocols. The services of the Lab will be contracted by members of the UIB as well as by external academic and private customers.

The genomic lab manager will specifically be responsible for:
- Setting up and maintenance of new equipment.
- Coordination and management of the genomics laboratory.
- Fine-tuning of DNA extraction protocols and preparation of short and long fragment libraries.
- Coordination and management of the genomic lab – incl. purchase of consumables and laboratory material.
- Training and supervision of technicians.
- Outsourcing of services (incl. management and budgets).
- Along with the Project Manager, ensure participation of the Balearic
- Biodiversity Centre in international networks such as EBP and ERGA, following their procedures, protocols and standards.

Qualification requirements and competences
Applicants must document high genomic skills and understanding of the theoretical bases – demonstrated by record of publications, participation in scientific projects, or previous jobs in sequencing facilities. PhD is a plus but not mandatory.
Knowledge of NGS protocols (RNA-seq, small RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, Hi-C, amplicon, exome, genomic and metagenome sequencing). Expertise in long-fragment sequencing in PacBio or Nanopore platforms is a plus.
Knowledge of computational methods for sequence analysis and interpretation.
Highly developed organizational skills.
Keen interest in further developing NGS protocols and applications.
Open personality, capability to easily interact with people and communicate effectively with the team.

3) POSTDOC IN BIOINFORMATICS
We are looking for a highly motivated and talented early-career postdoctoral researcher (preferably with postdoctoral experience), specialized in comparative genomics and sequence analysis. The appointee will work on exciting research projects collaborating with other scientists in the Balearic Biodiversity Centre and the local research community who are generating novel data (whole-genome sequences, RNAseq transcriptome data, Illumina, Nanopore, or PacBio,...). These collaborations also allow your computational results to be experimentally validated.

The Postdoc in Bioinformatics will specifically be responsible for:
- Providing service to the Balearic Biodiversity Center.
- Assembly and annotation of genomes and transcriptomes. Comparative genomics.
- Sequence analyses.
- Set up pipelines of genomic data analyses in the local servers.

Qualification requirements and competences
Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related.
A strong research output (peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals) and contribution to developing and maintaining bioinformatic tools.
Hands-on experience in bioinformatics programming, (eg, python, C, or java) and git repositories.
Experience in bioinformatic tools developed in singularity, docker, galaxy, and elixir.
Experience in genome assembly and annotation particularly using long fragments.
Experience with the analysis of next-generation sequence data such as whole-genome sequencing, RNA-Seq and population genomics is a plus.
Strong interest in studying biologic patterns using genomics approaches.
Good, open communication skills and be willing to collaborate with multiple other researchers from our team.

4) DATA SCIENTIST/MANAGER
We are looking for a highly motivated and talented early-career computer scientist, with research and data management expertise. A PhD in computer science or bioinformatics is a plus but not mandatory. We are especially interested in a researcher who has strong experience in managing and curating large sample ecological/biological/biodiversity metadata. The appointee will be responsible for building the Biodiversity Centre databases including the natural history collection
database and multidisciplinary biodiversity database.

The successful candidate will specifically be responsible for:
- Create and manage a database of multidisciplinary biodiversity datasets, genomic databases and the natural history collection dataset including the biobank (with tissue and DNA).
- Manage the data already available and ready to transfer to the new Biodiversity Centre.
- Coordination of databases to meet international standards and to be shared among the different international open-access platforms (GBIF, NCBI, DiSSCo, etc) and other databases promoted by EBP and ERGA.
- Curation of the data and maintenance of bioinformatic and other tools and databases (including genomic data) located in our local servers.
- The candidate is encouraged to analyze these data based on their own research interests to make publications, and work on methodology-related projects of the Centre.

Qualification requirements and competences

A visible track record (e.g., publication and third-party funding experience) in the field. Previous experience in similar jobs/positions is an advantage. A Ph.D. degree in Data Science will be considered a plus.
Hands-on experience on data and database set-up and management.

5) COLLECTIONS AND BIODIVERSITY AND SYSTEMATICS TRAINING MANAGER
We are looking for a highly motivated and responsible, detail-oriented individual with the necessary management and curatorial skills to build, curate and oversee the new Balearic Biodiversity Centre collections. The appointee will also be responsible for building bridges and collaborations with other established biological collections in the Balearic Islands.

The successful candidate will specifically be responsible for:
-The acquisition of the needed equipment and material for the assigned collections space of the new Biodiversity Centre and preparing the space for the collections.
-Receiving, curation and database of the collections already available to 
be housed at the Centre. They will include wet collections, dry collections including herbarium, historic collections, microscopic slides, and bio-banking of tissue and nucleic acids (DNA/RNA).
- Generate the curate the collection database in collaboration with the Data management.
- Coordinate the digitization of collections and ensure the connection
with digital collection international networks.
- Coordination and collaborations with other Balearic collections at
different research institutions.
- Supervising the creation and content of the Balearic Biodiversity Centre
website
- Coordination of biodiversity and Biosystematics training and outreach
activities in the Centre.

Qualification requirements and competences
Degree in Biological Sciences, or related.
Hands-on experience on collection management and collection databases.
Previous experience in a similar role is a plus.
Hands-on experience in the preservation, curation and maintenance of natural history collections.
Good, open communication skills and be willing to collaborate with multiple other researchers from our team.
