Merlin Project Coordinator - Lab of Ornithology

The Cornell University Lab of Ornithology is on the lookout for a Merlin Project Coordinator.
Merlin is the most widely used app for identifying birds in the world. It is consistently a Top 10 free reference app in the U.S. App Store and reaches more than 1 million users a month. We’re looking for Project Coordinator who wants to support people who are new to birding by creating an app experience that helps people identify birds, find places to go birding, and connect to community.
The Merlin Project Coordinator will contribute to increasing diversity in the birding community by growing the app’s user base, coming up with fun ways to keep people actively watching birds, and offering opportunities to participate in collecting scientifically valuable data. A candidate who loves to dig into analytics to understand user behavior, increase engagement through in-app activities, and design collaborative outreach initiatives will thrive in this role. We are looking for someone who believes a critical path to conservation is to connect millions of people to birds, and this app is a vehicle to get people outdoors appreciating the natural world.
Merlin is a project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a globally recognized leader in technology, data management, and large-scale citizen science supporting birds and biodiversity conservation. As a nonprofit organization we curate more than a petabyte of digital assets, one billion bird sightings, and leverage innovative big data analysis tools and machine learning to produce software applications and services to empower a global community of bird and nature enthusiasts, researchers, conservationists, and educators. Merlin is integrated with eBird, a global database and community of birders gathering sightings to advance our understanding of bird populations. These linked projects are in an exciting growth phase as participation in birdwatching has increased dramatically since the pandemic and Merlin released automated sound identification features.
What You Will Do
Responsibilities of the Merlin Project Coordinator include:
Project Outreach: Provide day-to-day functional leadership by overseeing projects that engage the community in activities related to Merlin and eBird, including managing workflows, setting priorities, coordinating individual and group activities and managing activities to meet public release deadlines. Facilitate communication within and across teams to ensure that project objectives and key results are met. Define the scope and gather requirements for Merlin outreach projects.
Analytics & Data Management: Analyze user behavior in Merlin to improve the project’s user recruitment and outreach effort that develops the project on an international scale, supporting the Cornell Lab strategic goals, and progress towards objectives and key results.
Project Development: Collaborate with eBird project team and others to develop strategies to engage more users, and for users to deepen engagement with Merlin and eBird to advance the organization’s data collection and revenue generation goals.
Project Support: Support the public and community leaders in successfully participating in Merlin and coordinate the Merlin customer support team. Update web pages and provide content for social media outlets. Give presentations, write articles, blog posts, and other sources of information on the project.
This position located at the Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Hybrid work arrangement opportunity for in-person and remote work 1-2 days a week.

Key requirements
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, information science, science communications, social science, or related field and a minimum of 2 years’ experience or equivalent combination.
Deep understanding of birds and the birding community is required. Experience watching birds and/or working on projects to advance birdwatching and bird conservation.
Proven skills in project management are essential to coordinate multiple groups working towards the same deliverable and timeline for public launch.
Familiarity and proficiency with the Internet and content management systems is critical, along with a strong interest online tools to conduct research, engage and educate the public.
Prior knowledge of social media outlets.
Strong communication skills (written and oral) to clearly articulate vision and plans, and provide instruction effectively to all levels of management, staff, new partners, funding agencies, project participants, and visitors

Advanced degree preferred.
Proficiency in languages in addition to English.
At least five years of experience using eBird, Merlin, and other Lab resources.
Knowledge of birds of the world.
