The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit candidates to the position of

DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in AQUATIC SCIENCES

for a fixed-term from March 1, 2023, or as agreed, until December 31, 2025.

Within the Academy of Finland research project 'Next level process integration in microalgae biotechnology with digital applications' we are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher to pursue their doctoral studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The project will explore methods for microalgae cultivation, carbon dioxide and nutrient capture from recirculating aquaculture to support implementation of circular economy in Finland. The project is part of a larger consortium that develops optimization methods for algae cultivation and processing via advanced spectroscopy based monitoring and dynamic process modeling, promoting green and digital transition in economy.

The Doctoral candidate will perform laboratory studies to develop strategies to enhance microalgal growth via recovery of CO2 produced in respiration of fish and bacteria in recirculating aquaculture. Basic skills in working in laboratory are required. During the project, the Doctoral Researcher will acquire comprehensive knowledge and experience in algal culturing methods, as well as dissemination of research findings e.g. in the form of scientific publications and seminar presentations.

You are the person we are looking for if you have Master’s degree, or be about to obtain Master’s degree, in aquatic or environmental sciences, algae biotechnology or related field.
Experience in conducting experimental work in the laboratory. Earlier experience in cultivation of micro-algae would be an advantage but not a requirement.
Capability of conducting independent research, solid in English language and scientific writing.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Doctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The MSc degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position. Doctoral Researcher needs to be also enrolled in the doctoral programme which can be applied from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.

The initial annual salary will be approximately 28,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus). With progress of the thesis work, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Finnish Universities. The employment starts with a trial period of six months.
