Animal Telemetry Postdoctoral Fellow

Overview: The Smithsonian Institution seeks an energetic, field- and data-oriented biologist to support marine animal telemetry research focused on fish migrations in Chesapeake Bay. The position is based in SERC’s Fisheries Conservation Lab, led by Dr. Matt Ogburn, and is based in Edgewater, MD. It is a one-year renewable position with two years of funding anticipated. This is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package and requires occasional travel.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Initiates, develops, and participates in research and fieldwork in area of specialization.

  • Designs and conducts field sampling to measure variables like species composition and abundance, population size structure, and physiological condition.

  • Designs and conducts field and laboratory experiments.

  • Analyzes data using statistical and graphics software.

  • Writes reports, publishes scientific papers, and gives oral presentations.

  • Serves as consultant and advisor in area of expertise.

  • Assists with guidance and teaching of students and technicians.

  • Assists in preparation and submission of grant proposals.

  • Reviews research proposals and participates in conferences.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Biology, Marine Science, or related field.

  • Experience in animal telemetry research (acoustic telemetry of teleost fish preferred).

  • Detail-oriented, responsible, and able to work in challenging field conditions.

  • Data entry and management skills required (R preferred).

  • Knowledge of marine organism biology and taxonomy preferred.

  • Experience engaging with diverse fisheries stakeholders preferred.

Compensation: $69,923 per year
