PhD POSITION: KOALA GENETICS AND MANAGEMENT

Sippy Downs Campus, University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia (Redlands Coast field work)

Contract Type:

PhD scholarship - 3 years full-time with possible extension

Main Description:

Join a fully funded PhD project measuring success of management strategies for koalas in highly anthropogenic landscapes. The position combines conservation genetics, conservation management, landscape ecology, and disease research (chlamydia) focusing on koalas. You'll work with a team of ~15 students and staff using cutting-edge technology including detection dogs, drones, and Bluetooth solar-powered ear tags.

Key activities include:

  • Leading weekly koala tracking and scat collection in urban/semi-urban areas
  • Conducting surveys using detection dogs and/or drones with almost 10 years of long-term monitoring data
  • Engaging community with new conservation technology
  • Performing molecular analyses of non-invasive scat samples
  • Statistical analyses of genetics and wildlife hospital datasets
  • Exploring methods to measure conservation management success

Requirements:

  • Essential: Self-motivated with scientific mindset
  • Background in: Genetics, ecology, zoology, biology, or veterinary science
  • Values: Commitment to inclusivity, kindness, compassion and equity
  • Competitive profile: Honours first class, publications preferred
  • Must meet PhD program entry requirements at UniSC

Benefits/Conditions:

  • Stipend: AUD $35,482 per annum (tax-free for full-time students, paid fortnightly)
  • Tuition offset scholarship: AUD $28,000 per annum
  • Relocation allowance: AUD $2,000
  • Duration: 3 years support aligned with thesis submission
  • Field work location: Urban/semi-urban areas (not remote)
