Postdoctoral Research Associate - Into the minds of magpies: cognition, development, and comparative perspectives
Location: University of Cambridge Sub-Department of Animal Behaviour, Madingley village, UK
Organization: University of Cambridge with Prof Nicola Clayton FRS
Contract Type: Fixed-term post, 3 years funding available (Leverhulme Trust-funded project)
Main Description: This exciting Leverhulme Trust-funded project will systematically assess the mental capabilities and cognitive development of magpies (Pica pica). Despite magpies being considered cunning and displaying seemingly 'intelligent' behaviours, the extent of their cognitive abilities remains unknown. The project has three overarching objectives: 1) To investigate the cognitive capabilities of magpies using well-established experimental paradigms from comparative psychology; 2) To assess how their cognition varies from hatching to adulthood; and 3) To position magpies within the corvid cognition research body and broader comparative cognition framework.
The PDRA will be responsible for collecting and hand-rearing wild Eurasian magpies, designing experimental procedures, building apparatus, conducting experiments, analysing data, and producing manuscripts for publication as first author. Opportunities for mentorship and leadership will be provided through the Cambridge Comparative Cognition Research group and external collaborators.
Requirements:
- PhD in psychology, animal behaviour, or related field
- Experience working with animals, ideally birds (preferentially corvids)
- Significant experience in animal cognition/experimental psychology research
- Relevant publication track record
- Ability to independently conduct and lead research to meet project objectives
Benefits/Conditions:
- Freedom and flexibility to tailor experiments to own interests and skills
- Assistance from Cambridge Comparative Cognition Research group members
- Opportunities for mentorship and leadership
- Conference dissemination opportunities
