Summer Camp Teacher Naturalist

Main Description:
Summer Camp Teacher Naturalists are the core of our seasonal program staff. They are responsible for the implementation of high-energy, hands-on, experiential summer camp programs. Participant ages typically range from 5 to 13, with a focus on elementary students. Teacher Naturalists must be enthusiastic about connecting youth with the natural world and comfortable leading groups outdoors in all summer weather conditions.
Responsibilities:
- Program Implementation: Lead engaging, inquiry-based outdoor summer camp sessions, fostering curiosity and personal growth in a safe environment.
- Safety & Supervision: Provide a safe and positive learning environment by managing group dynamics and remaining aware of environmental hazards.
- Curriculum Adaptation: Adapt daily activities based on weather, student engagement levels, and group needs to maintain high-quality programming.
- Communication: Maintain professional communication with parents, fellow staff, and program coordinators regarding daily schedules and student needs.
- Facility Care: Assist with the organization and maintenance of educational equipment and camp facilities.
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Experience teaching or leading youth in formal or non-formal settings (camps, schools, etc.) is preferred.
- Ability to stand, walk, and engage participants in outdoor programming for extended periods in various summer weather conditions.
- Comfortable working with diverse groups of youth and the general public.
- Knowledge of local natural history, biology, or ecology is preferred.
- Responsible, dependable, self-motivated, and highly enthusiastic.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a high-energy seasonal team.
Benefits/Conditions:
- Salary: $14 - $16 per hour
- Schedule: 25+ hour work week
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification provided
- Eligible for internship hours or academic credit (subject to institutional approval)
- Possibility of a long-term or continued seasonal position
- Early start date in May available for qualified candidates
- Housing is not provided
