Assistants needed for a song evolution project

We are looking for one or multiple assistants to help process large numbers of audio recordings for a project on song evolution. The project is run jointly by Dr Javier Oñate Casado (Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence) and Dr Anna N. Osiecka (Humboldt University in Berlin, supervisor).

We are investigating the evolution of rhythmic structure in the songs of a globally distributed genus of songbirds with very different song structures, Anthus (pipits). By analyzing existing recordings from large open repositories, complemented by additional data on several pipit species contributed in collaboration with Dr Tereza Petrusková (Charles University), we aim to understand how geographic and phylogenetic distance have shaped the vocal evolution in this lineage.

We are seeking students or a professional annotator experienced in bioacoustics. Assistants will primarily work on song annotation tasks using Raven Pro or Luscinia. The work will involve identifying and annotating vocal elements to quantify rhythmic and structural aspects of songs across species.

The dataset comprises several hundred recordings spanning multiple species. Given the scale of the material and the importance of consistency in annotation, we ideally seek a candidate who can commit regularly over several months. However, the specific workload and timeline will be agreed individually and can be adapted depending on availability.

Clear annotation guidelines, initial onboarding, and regular discussions on project progress will be provided to ensure consistency and high-quality data generation throughout the collaboration.

While students will not be directly compensated, a research visit can be arranged to one of the supervisor’s institutions (e.g. via Erasmus+ traineeship, CEEPUS, or similar schemes) to financially support participation. If the student is not interested in a research visit but still wishes to contribute, a fully remote collaboration is possible, but not preferred.

This project provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in bioacoustics, vocal rhythm analysis, and song evolution research under close supervision. This is not a thesis project, but co-authorship in any resulting publications is guaranteed for both student assistants / professional annotators who make substantial contributions to the project.

A professional annotator will be considered under the following conditions:

  1. The person has significant bioacoustics experience, preferably with substantial experience annotating multiple species, and with the ability to carry out annotation tasks independently and consistently, requiring only limited guidance.

  2. They are able to fully take over the entire annotation dataset.

  3. They can present a justified offer for evaluation by Humboldt University (including quota and completion timeline).

  4. They are able to issue an official invoice. A European invoice is required, and a German one is preferred.

Knowledge of pipit songs is a strong advantage. Among applicants, the best combination of experience and price offer will determine the selection.

There is no fixed application deadline. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is identified. Early applications are therefore encouraged.

If interested, please contact Dr Osiecka at o.a.n@tuta.io, enclosing your CV, a very brief explanation of interest and availability, and quota in case of professional annotation.
