Position: RESEARCH ASSISTANT I [RAI GNMP], Full-time, Non-exempt

Description: A full-time position is available at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) Ecosystems Center with shared duties 6 months as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the Semester in Environmental Science (SES) for undergraduates and 6 months as a Research Assistant (RA) working on the Groundwater Nitrogen Mitigation Project, an innovative approach to improving water quality in nitrogen sensitive coastal ponds. This position is funded for two years.

Duties: Duties for the first 4.5 months of employment will be to serve as a Dorm Resident Teaching Assistant (DRTA) in the SES program. Responsibilities include helping to enforce MBL policies in the dormitory residence. An apartment in the MBL dormitory will be provided. The DRTA should be available during evenings and weekends to counsel student and assist with course and lab work during non-course hours. During the second year, the employee will serve at a TA in the program, but will not be required to be a dorm resident. As a TA, the successful applicant will work with the SES Associate Director and instructors to assist with preparation for lab and fieldwork associated with the SES program. Specific tasks associated with the SES include: assisting in uncrating and setting up equipment and supplies required for the SES program beginning prior to the start of the Fall semester, maintaining an orderly and organized laboratory including cleaning and putting away glassware and specialized equipment used in lab work in the core courses and making certain unused supplies are properly inventoried, repacked and stored. In addition, the TA will help supervise students with chemical and laboratory analyses, fieldwork, data analysis and calculations for core course labs and projects as needed. It is desirable that the applicant be able to assist in maintaining smooth functioning of the SES computer network. During half of the year (approximately February through mid August), the employee will work as an RA with principal investigators on the Groundwater Nitrogen Mitigation Project, assisting with field work, sample collection, chemical analyses (e.g., total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonia and phosphorus, preparation of samples for stable isotopic measurements and dissolved gas analysis, ion chromatography) and data work-up. The RA may also be responsible for measures of microbial abundance and activity including assisting with bioassays to measure Dissolved Organic Matter liability.

Conditions: Must reside in the MBL dormitory (included) during the first 4.5 months of employment. Continuation in this position is dependent upon satisfactory performance. This position will begin August 15, 2004 and is funded through December 31, 2006.

Education: SKILLS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A BA or BS in biology, chemistry or environmental science. Experience with standard laboratory techniques used in biogeochemistry and ecosystems science such as oxygen and nutrient analyses. Must have familiarity with personal computers with Windows, MS Word and Excel. Must have a valid driver�s license and be comfortable driving a large van or small truck. Knowledge of boating safety, ability to pilot small boats is helpful. Prior experience working with, overseeing or supervision college age students desirable. Demonstrated ability to relate well to students and enforce rules and policies appropriately required.
