POSITION OVERVIEW


WAZA is seeking a dedicated, creative, and proactive individual to join us as an Animal Welfare and Conservation Intern. In this role, you will work closely with the Animal Welfare and Conservation Coordinator to support various initiatives and projects planned for 2024. Additionally, you may collaborate with other departments as needed.

Salary: 1,400 EUR gross/month plus 200 Euros per month in ticket restaurants
Duration: six months
Estimated start date: January-February 2024

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide support to the WAZA Animal Welfare and Conservation Coordinator with administrative tasks related to the smooth functioning of the WAZA Ethics and Animal Welfare Committee, WAZA Conservation and Environmental Sustainability Committee (CESC), and WAZA Committee for Population Management (CPM).
Assist the WAZA Animal Welfare and Conservation Coordinator with event preparation, including the WAZA Annual Conference and related conferences.
Support the development of conservation and environmental sustainability resources and promote existing resources in collaboration with the Communications team.
Assist in the development of communications and outreach efforts related to the WAZA 2023 Animal Welfare Goal and the WAZA 2027 Population Management Goal in close collaboration with the Communications team.
Facilitate the coordination of translations for existing resources and ensure the effective layout of recently published guides.
Support the monitoring of conservation and animal welfare related opportunities in media at WAZA member zoos and aquariums and stay updated on new scientific papers relevant to the global zoo and aquarium community.
Contribute to the good functioning of the International Studbook and Global Species Management Plansprogrammes, including assistance with keeper and convenor transfers, magazine updates, photo selection, and coordination of website updates.
Update the WAZA Wikipedia entry, highlighting WAZA 2023 AWG, ISB, GSMPs, and sustainability resources, in close collaboration with the Communications team.
Actively collaborate with your colleagues.

Day to day duties include, but are not limited to:Email monitoring.
Minute taking and action tracking for WAZA Committees.
Collaboration with the WAZA Communications team for the development of conservation, animal welfare, or environmental sustainability posts on social media.
Liaising with volunteers to translate newly published WAZA resources.
Social media monitoring for WAZA members’ conservation and animal welfare-related news.
Monitor Animal Welfare and Conservation emails.
Support the implementation and development of the WAZA 2023 Animal Welfare Goal and the WAZA 2027 Population Management Goal.
Assistance with events.
Assist with general administrative tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
WAZA Interns should have acquired a university degree (BSc. / BA or equivalent) within the last two years, ideally in biological or environmental sciences. Other degrees may be considered.
Candidates who can demonstrates relevant experience or strong motivation to join the WAZA Team and support our mission will also be considered.
A Spanish work permit will be required, as the WAZA Executive Office is located in Barcelona.

Competencies

WAZA Interns should exhibit as many of the competencies listed below as possible:Proficient in English. Proficiency in additional languages is a bonus, but not a strict requirement.
Good organisational and time management skills.
Excellent reading, writing and summarising skills.
Proficiency in programmes like Word, Excel and P
Some knowledge in Adobe InDesign – or motivation to learn – will be advantageous.
Strong ability to work independently and proactively to support their supervisor.
Strong flexibility to support the WAZA Team wherever may be needed after approval by supervisor.
