Curso: Introducción a la ilustración científica - 11-15 de Noviembre 2019, Barcelona


INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF SCIENCE: SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION
November 11th-15th, 2019, Barcelona (Spain)
Scientific illustration blends the discipline and creativity of science and art to produce images that serve and communicate science.
This course is designed to help scientists, science communicators, artists, and adults interested in natural history develop the observation skills and drawing skills they need to record, distill, and visually communicate observations made of natural history objects and organisms. Traditional scientific illustration techniques as well as the history, significance, status, and future directions of scientific illustration will be explored in this hands-on studio-style course.
Objectives:
  • Develop and improve scientific observational and visual communication
  • Recognize and transform observable scientific information into scientifically accurate illustrations for use in publications and presentations.
  • Understand and appreciate the history and function of scientific illustration as a medium for disseminating scientific knowledge and concepts.
  • Learn and practice a variety of drawing and illustration techniques that can be used in the field, the laboratory, and for fun.

Program

The five days of instruction and hands-on activities will include:
  • Visual thinking strategies and learning how to see.
  • Drawing with graphite, carbon, and other pencil types.
  • Pen and ink illustration techniques including stippling and line work.
  • Creating illustrations with scratchboard, carbon dust, coquille board, and other media.
  • Converting and using hand drawn illustrations in digital formats.

Classes will meet for six hours of instruction and in-class work per day. Students will be encouraged to practice observing, drawing, and using illustration techniques outside of class hours.

This is an introductory course focused on drawing and the different techniques. This course is designed to help scientists, science communicators, artists, and adults interested in natural history develop the observation skills and drawing skills they need to record, distill, and visually communicate observations made of natural history objects and organisms. Traditional scientific illustration techniques as well as the history, significance, status, and future directions of scientific illustration will be explored in this hands-on studio-style course.
  • NATURALISTIC AND SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION – 4th September 23rd-27th, 2019, Crete (Greece).
Instructor: Oscar Sanisidro (Kansas University, USA)
This course offers a broad introduction to scientific illustration applied to Biological Sciences. It is also intended to give a hands-on overview of the most current technological advances in the field, such as basic computer graphics applied to science illustration and 3D modelling. The course will be focused on how to translate traditional drawings into an improved digital version. It is of intermediate level, some basic experience with illustration is strongly recommended.
