I am seeking a volunteer field assistant to help with a behavioural study of
dwarf mongooses, for a three month period beginning in September 2011.
The study is based in a wildlife-rich game reserve adjacent to Kruger National
Park in NE South Africa. The volunteer will be following groups of mongooses on
foot recording their social behaviour, assisting with playback experiments or
helping to habituate mongooses to the presence of an observer.
I'm looking for someone who loves working with animals, and preferably has a
degree in zoology (or associated field), an interest in behavioural ecology, a
strong grasp of English and a valid driver’s licence.
Applicants must be prepared to work alone and on foot in a bushy habitat (the
reserve contains no buffalo, black rhino, lions or elephants, but the last two
species occasionally pass through) and be able to cope with social isolation
and trying field conditions (heat, starting work at dawn, spiders, snakes,
etc.). Basic food and accommodation will be provided, but the volunteer will
need to cover their own travel costs.
