A new research project on

“Restoration of tropical rainforest in degraded landscapes”

invites applications for one postdoctoral position in Conservation Biology beginning in mid 2023 for a period of 3 years.

The project (acronym: UpScaleR) is funded by a grant from the Foundation UniScientia to the Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDa), Germany. The fixed-term positions will be implemented at the Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) in Quito in close collaboration with TUDa and Fundación Jocotoco.

UpScaleR aims at understanding the dynamics of natural forest recovery from agriculture and degraded land, comparisons with active tree plantations and the contribution of frugivorous vertebrates to tree dispersal. The research will be conducted in and around the Buenaventura Forest Reserve in southwestern Ecuador run by Fundación Jocotoco. The reserve successfully restores and protects a unique tropical forest in the western foothills of the Andes and is home to a particularly diverse flora and fauna including many endemic species. We will study the seed dispersal of tree communities by birds and/or mammals (plant-frugivore networks) in formerly deforested areas, focusing on seedlings, fruit traits and fruit-dispersing animals (especially birds, potentially bats and other mammals). We aim to compare tree and forest recovery across sites with different degrees of forest cover in the surrounding, and aim to unravel the importance of dispersal limitation and the forest matrix for recovery success. This involves extensive monitoring and identification of trees, seedlings, and birds or possibly bats or other mammals. A good level of taxonomic knowledge in plants and/or vertebrates is thus highly desirable for a successful application.

The UpScaleR project aims to inform conservation, forest restoration and management and will be conducted closely together with Fundación Jocotoco. Together, we offer an excellent, international, research environment and research training both at the UDLA, TUDa, as well as in the Research Unit “Reassembly” in North-West Ecuador to which this project is tightly linked. (UpScaleR is an extension – “upscaling” – of Reassembly in a forest dominated landscape context to Buenaventura with a more degraded forest landscape). This project framework thus involves lively collaboration and networking with many scientists, colleagues and PhD candidates from Ecuador and Germany. Both scientists will also visit the two labs in UDLA (their main host institution) and Darmstadt for some time. Employment as a researcher will be at UDLA at their conditions and competitive salaries.

The postdoctoral position is aimed at experienced scientists that have completed a PhD (in botany, zoology or ecology or related disciplines). Applications from any country are welcome, but candidates from Ecuador or other Latin American countries have a large advantage. We expect the postdoc to work together with, and co-advise, a PhD candidate (who has already been selected in a previous call). Both UpScaleR scientists (the postdoc and PhD candidate) will spend many months during the first two years in the remote study area to conduct field work, experiments and plot selection in collaboration with the local staff of Jocotoco. Field work experience in remote areas such as tropical forests and good physical conditions are essential in addition to scientific qualifications, good writing skills in English and communication skills in Spanish. German language proficiency is not required.

The project will be supervised by Nico Blüthgen, professor for ecology at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Juan Ernesto Guevara, professor for botany at Universidad de Las Américas in Quito, and Martin Schaefer, conservation biologist and director of Jocotoco. We are seeking a team member with experience in one of climate or weather modelling, environmental physics, hydrology or microclimate ecology - including the dependence of organismal physiology on small-scale climate variation - to create a model for understanding microclimate patterns in a tropical rainforest.

We particularly invite female applicants and applicants from underrepresented groups in STEM subjects. We also welcome applications from candidates that would like full-time or part-time positions on this project, and will support job-sharing arrangements.

As a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Microclimate Modelling, you will collaborate on the development of one of four modules that together will form a virtual rainforest (the others are plants, animals and soil microbes). All team members will have the opportunity to develop their skills and competencies through the sharing of tasks and knowledge, and you will be given time, resources and encouragement to pursue your professional development.

Ecosystems cannot be understood through piecemeal studies of their individual components. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Forest Microclimate, you will be part of an attempt to generate a synthetic, systems-level understanding of how a tropical forest ecosystem operates. We are building a team to create a virtual rainforest: a general ecosystem model replicating the physical and biotic components of the ecosystem and their interactions, with a view to understanding system-level emergent properties.

You will be responsible of developing a process-based simulation of the physical environment in a tropical rainforest ecosystem, that will be one of four modules that together will form the virtual rainforest (the others are plants, animals and soil microbes). Your simulation will be based on inputs of local topography, macro and regional climate from atmospheric circulation models, and dynamically updated vegetation structure from the plants module, from which it will need to predict spatial and temporal variation in microclimate (e.g. air and soil temperature, soil moisture, vapour pressure deficit), vertical profiles of wind speed and canopy temperature, and, ideally, streamflow (e.g. base flows, flood frequency and magnitude).

Your primary role will be to develop the physical environment module of a virtual rainforest simulation, and you will be assisted in this by additional team members. The project provides a generous budget for

Postdoctoral researcher in Soil Science

The position should be filled, starting 01.06.2019 and is offered
under a fixed term contract for three years, with the option to 
extend with another period of up to 3 years. The salary is in 
accordance with the German public service salary scale (TV-L E13) 
with 100 %, which corresponds to 39.8 working hours per week.

Your duties:
The soil science of tropical and subtropical ecosystems group 
conducts research on the role of soils in carbon, nutrient cycling 
and trace gas exchange in natural and managed tropical and 
subtropical ecosystems. Within this context, we expect that the 
successful applicant will develop his/her own research profile and 
that he/she will lead the trace gas laboratory as part of his/her 
qualification. Teaching responsibilities are 5 SWS (weekly hours 
per semester) with lectures, field and laboratory exercises.

Your Profile:
- Ph.D. with a Master/Diploma in soil science or related 
disciplines (geo-ecology, environmental sciences, forest ecology, 
etc.)
- Research experience in tropical and/or subtropical countries 
(also as a postdoc)
- Excellent knowledge of statistics, skills in data analysis with R
and/or programming
- Experience with methods for trace gas analysis
- Scientific creativity shown by a track record of original and 
innovative research
- Proficiency in English

Asistente de investigación en la selva peruana

A research assistant is required to assist with research on tree community dynamics in tropical Peru. The project examines seedling communities in lowland rainforest at the Cocha Cashu Biological Station of Manu National Park. A student or recent graduate would suit this position as there will be
free time to develop your own project. The station provides access to pristine, undisturbed tropical forest, with intact fauna and flora, so opportunities for interesting research projects are great and you will be surrounded by researchers at all career stages.

Main Duties
• Research assistant required for 3 months from July to September 2016.
• You will be spraying seedling plots spread throughout the forest every 10
days and monitoring the condition of wire mesh exclosures, these need to be
mended if they are damaged. Time between these treatments is your own to
develop your own work.
Requirements
• Previous fieldwork experience desirable, particularly experience working
at remote sites.
• You will be walking long distances every day in hot, humid conditions, so
applicants must be fit, self-motivated, and tolerant to biting insects.
• Work is to be carried out without supervision so you must be confident and
responsible working alone in the field.
• Some knowledge of Spanish would be beneficial but is not required.

Accommodation, Transport and Costs
Accommodation will be camping on tent platforms in the forest, the field
station has an office with electricity, showers and food and drinking water.
