Post-doc position in avian social evolution at the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behavior, University of Konstanz.

The Griesser lab invites application for a postdoctoral position as part of a project at the interdisciplinary Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behavior. The project investigates the consequences of the interplay between individual and group social phenotype in a wild bird species. Not only individuals but also groups vary in their social phenotype. Although the latter component is rarely considered, it is potentially quite important: successful groups should be better at coordinating their behaviours, e.g., during foraging or predator encounters, and thus influence the fitness of group members.

This project will investigate these links in a wild population of Siberian jays (Perisoreus infaustus) in Swedish Lapland, monitored since 1989. This bird species lives in stable, enduring groups composed of a breeding pair and up to 4 non-breeders, and we follow individuals in up to 90 groups throughout their life to collect life-history and behavioural data. The project will combine field experiments with existing long-term data to investigate the interplay between individual and group social phenotype, and its consequences. You will join the Griesser lab and the interdisciplinary team at the Excellence Cluster for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour at the University of Konstanz. The position should begin 1st July 2022 and will be fully funded for 22 months (salary scale 13/3 TV-L).

Your qualifications:
  • PhD in behavioural ecology, ecology, evolutionary biology, or similar;
  • Field experience of behavioural observations and experimental work;
  • Bird handling experience (including mist netting);
  • Highly motivated and sociable personality;
  • Project management skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team;
  • Driver’s license (manual transmission);
  • Basic knowledge of X-country or downhill skiing is an advantage.

Expenses paid field assistant positions to assist fieldwork with Siberian Jays in Swedish Lapland

We are looking for 2 highly motivated, expenses paid field volunteers to join our long-term field project on Siberian jays (main responsible PD Dr. Michael Griesser, University of Konstanz, Germany).

For the upcoming field season (5 Aug ¡V 8 Nov 2021) we are looking for 2 assistants to help with our work on social evolution in Siberian jays. The assistants will help with catching and ringing birds, do behavioural observations, do field experiments, and assist with data management. The work will be carried out in both pristine and managed boreal forests. Observe that temperatures in the end of the season can be as low as -15C, involves walking up to 15km per day, and that fieldwork can be physically strenuous at times.

Qualifications:
  1. Field work experience, involving behavioural observations and experiments
  2. Bird ringing and mist-netting experience
  3. Ability to work in small teams and sociable personality
  4. Driving license (manual transmission)
  5. Fluent in English
  6. Highly motivated

Postdoc de 2+ años sobre evolución social de abejas en UK

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION: SOCIAL EVOLUTION IN SWEAT BEES

A 2 year full time ERC-funded postdoctoral position is available starting 1 June 2019 in the research group of Professor Jeremy Field, based in the Centre for Ecology & Conservation, University of Exeter, Cornwall Campus, UK (http://biosciences.exeter.ac.uk/staff/index.php?web_id=Jeremy_Field). The successful applicant will work on a project investigating the evolution
of queen-worker caste differences and social behaviour in sweat bees (Halictidae: Lasioglossum, Halictus). Additional funding, beyond the initial 2 years, may be available depending on the needs of the project.

The post will involve work that could include carrying out field
transplants, behavioural observations and experiments, together with
transcriptomic work relating behaviour to gene expression (see Field et
al. 2010 Current Biology 20:2028-31 for an example of our behavioural
work). The successful applicant will have relevant experience in
evolutionary or behavioural ecology and/or transcriptomics with non-model
organisms.

The closing date for completed applications is 31 March 2019. Interviews
are provisionally expected to take place during 22-30 April 2019.

A post-doc position (up to 5 years) is available for doing research at the interface between evolutionary biology and behavioral economics at the University of Lausanne. The project will be co-supervised by Luis Santos-Pinto (an economist, http://www.hec.unil.ch/lspinto) and Laurent Lehmann (an evolutionary biologist, https://www.unil.ch/dee/en/home/menuinst/people/group-leaders/prof-laurent-lehmann.html).

The project is open but should pertain to both evolutionary biology
and behavioral economics e.g., evolution of cooperation, evolution
of preferences, evolution of individual and social learning, attitudes
towards risk, corruption, heritability of behavior or personality traits,
and should aim at addressing question that are preferentially theoretical
(but empiricist are also encourage to apply).

Applicants should have a master degree in a relevant area (e.g.,
behavioural ecology, evolutionary biology, economics, management),
with strong mathematical and computing skills, and a vivid interest in
fundamental research.

Dos postdocs para trabajar en virología en Valencia, España

Two 2-3 year postdoc contracts are available at the laboratory of Rafael Sanjuán (University of Valencia, Spain).

Starting date: flexible (mid 2017 to early 2018).

Place: recently created Institute for Integrative Systems Biology
(I2SysBio), Valencia, Spain.

Project title: Collective Infectious Units and the Social Evolution of
Viruses.

Funding:  ERC Consolidator Grant, 2017-2022.

Goal: understand how multi-virion infectious units determine social-like interactions in viruses (cooperation versus conflict). We will use vesicular stomatitis virus and/or enteroviruses and/or baculoviruses as model systems.

Candidates should have a background in virology and molecular/cell biology.

ERC project summary:

A widely accepted view in virology is that virions function as independent
infectious units. However, recent work by us and others indicates that
viruses are often transmitted as more complex structures, such as virion
aggregates, lipid vesicles or protein matrices harbouring multiple
infectious particles. This demonstrates that viruses can be transmitted as
"collective infectious units", in contrast with the current paradigm.
Critically, these recent discoveries now set the stage for the evolution of
social interactions, a previously unappreciated facet of viruses. We propose
to investigate how collective infectious units drive virus social evolution
using state-of-the-art tools from the fields of virology, genetics,
structural biology, and nanotechnology. The effects of collective
infectivity on viral fitness will be tested directly using experimental
evolution and genetic engineering, and confirmed in vivo. Three widely
different viruses will be used to achieve generality: human enteroviruses, a
vector-borne rhabdovirus, and a baculovirus. Furthermore, the implications
of virus social interactions for the maintenance of genetic diversity,
evolvability, virulence evolution, and the emergence of drug resistance will
be investigated. New processes such as the putative extracellular fusion of
viral particles will be also explored. We expect that infectious units
constituted by viruses from different species will be uncovered as well,
with far-reaching implications for epidemiology. It is becoming increasingly
recognized that parasite sociality is a disease determinant, and our results
may therefore inspire new antiviral strategies. Beyond their practical
importance viruses will also provide a simple and tractable system that will
help us to establish more general principles of social evolution.
