Main Description:
CIBIO is seeking an Assistant Researcher to carry out scientific research activities under a permanent contract. The successful candidate will participate in the design, development and execution of R&D projects, supervise research work, contribute to scientific training, and manage research staff. The position has a strong emphasis on genetics, functional genomics, and evolutionary and developmental biology, with a focus on non-model vertebrates.

Requirements:

• PhD in Biological Sciences or related field, obtained at least 5 years ago
• 5+ years of postdoctoral experience with an independent and consolidated research track record in genetics, functional genomics, and evolutionary and developmental biology
• Demonstrated expertise in genetic and cellular mechanisms of biological pattern formation, morphogenesis, and phenotypic diversification in vertebrates
• Experience with non-model systems and emerging genomic technologies (scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, bulk RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, Hi-C, etc.)
• Proficiency in both experimental and computational approaches to integrative functional genetics and genomics

El Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos (IREC – CSIC, UCLM, JCCM), en el marco de un convenio con Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación (MAPA) del Gobierno de España y en colaboración con otras iniciativas nacionales y europeas, está diseñando una Red de Seguimiento de Fauna Silvestre Terrestre en España (FAUNET), que se implementará durante los próximos 4 años. Para su puesta en marcha, el proyecto requiere la incorporación de personal, por lo que en septiembre se abrirá un proceso de contratación de personal técnico.

Como perfil enfocado hacia la monitorización de fauna silvestre terrestre en el seno de un equipo altamente especializado, el personal técnico de FAUNET participará en diversas actividades, desde la recopilación de datos hasta la planificación y coordinación de estudios para determinar densidades (principalmente de ungulados y carnívoros) a lo largo de toda la geografía española (ver guía de métodos de referencia). El trabajo incluye tanto tareas de campo como el procesado y análisis de la información generada y la preparación de informes de resultados.

Para optar a estos puestos de trabajo se requiere estar en posesión de un Ciclo formativo superior o Grado en ciencias biológicas, ambientales, veterinarias y afines. En el proceso de selección también se valorará la experiencia y conocimientos en el manejo y muestreo de fauna silvestre (fototrampeo y transectos lineales), la aplicación de metodologías para la determinación de densidades de fauna terrestre y en el manejo de sistemas de información geográfica y software estadístico.


Se ofertan un total de 4 puestos de trabajo con una duración inicial de 6 meses, con posibilidades de renovación hasta 3 años, cuya tipología se corresponde con la de personal técnico a jornada completa según las tablas de remuneración de Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). Research Associate in Early Vertebrate Palaeontology

We seek a vertebrate palaeontologist or evolutionary biologist to collaborate on a NERC-funded project investigating the origin of vertebrate fins and girdles for up to 35 months. The origin of paired appendages is one of the 'holy grails' of vertebrate evolution but is a persistent evolutionary mystery. This project will use high-resolution tomography and 3D imaging to test theories about the anatomical origins of the pectoral girdle. The project will use comparative analyses of exceptionally preserved jawless and jawed fishes that demonstrate the earliest stages in the evolution of paired appendages.

The project is a NERC-funded collaboration between Dr Martin Brazeau (Imperial College), Dr Zerina Johanson (The Natural History Museum, UK), and Prof Matt Friedman (University of Michigan). A large body of tomographic data has already been generated to support this project and the candidate will form the basis for a series of detailed anatomical investigations, comparative specimen-based analyses, and phylogenetic studies.

This project represents an exciting opportunity to unify disparate strands of evidence from palaeontology, comparative anatomy, and comparative development, and will appeal to candidates with experience in any of these areas. The position will offer opportunities for research travel, support for conference attendance, and international collaboration, as well as career development.

Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for undertaking novel comparative anatomical and palaeontological study of exceptionally preserved early vertebrate fossils. You will be processing, visualising, and archiving these data and preparing imagery, figures, and interpretations which will result in collaborative development of new scientific publications and conference presentations. You will collaborate with the PI in the operation of the lab and will have opportunity to supervise students who are directly supporting your research objectives.

Essential requirements

• Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in vertebrate palaeontology or related field or a closely related discipline.
• Prior work with computed tomography and segmentation software (e.g., Mimics, Avizo, VG Studio)
• Have undertaken comparative morphological investigation
• Have conducted prior work with collections-based material
• Understanding of phylogenetic methods and their practical implementation

Desirable skills

• Expertise in early (Palaeozoic) vertebrates

About the Role
The School of BioSciences is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, native wildlife biologist to join the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne.

We are looking to diversify our zoology program while ensuring our new colleague has collaborative opportunities within the University of Melbourne and can contribute to teaching a wide range of subjects in our BSc major in zoology and ecology and evolution. Areas of particular interest are in vertebrate physiology (broadly defined) and native vertebrate population ecology and conservation.

In this position, you will be expected to teach subjects in zoology and terrestrial field ecology within the School’s undergraduate and MSc programs and develop relevant “subjects” (the word the University of Melbourne uses for courses) where appropriate. In research you will be expected to supervise research students at undergraduate, MSc and MPhil/PhD levels, obtain external research funding to support a productive and impactful research program.

This position has a slightly modified focus toward teaching. In the first five years of this position the successful candidate will have a 50/40/10 (teaching/research/service) split. Following confirmation at the end of five years this split will revert to a standard 40/40/20 position.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Vertebrate Zoology including Organismal Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology aspects. We seek candidates with a strong publication record working in any area of vertebrate biology, and on any vertebrate group, whose work emphasizes field-based studies within an evolutionary context. Possible research areas include (but are not limited to) phylogenetics, biogeography, adaptation, speciation, evolutionary genetics, genomics, and comparative morphology. Postdoctoral experience, success in obtaining third party research funding, training in collections and teaching experience will be of added value. The successful candidate is expected to engage in scholarly activities, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, investigate broad questions related to the origin and diversification of vertebrates, and lead research projects. The position involves about 40% research, 20% academic service and 40% teaching, which will include about two courses per semester, including an undergraduate course on Vertebrate Zoology. It is also anticipated that the candidates will establish collaborations with professors and students from across the Biology Department and the Earth System Sciences program, and with other academic units at Universidad del Rosario.

Postdoc monitorizando vertebrados terrestres con ADN ambiental...¡por el aire!

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a 3-year position to work on airborne environmental DNA for terrestrial vertebrate monitoring. The position is to commence 1 May 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our research
The successful candidate will be part of the Environmental DNA Group at the Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen. The group is led by Associate Professor Kristine Bohmann and currently consists of one assistant professor, two postdocs and three PhD students. We focus on environmental DNA and the use of metabarcoding and high-throughput sequencing to assess biodiversity in both modern and ancient environmental samples. Our work includes e.g. the development of laboratory protocols, technical studies, analyses of environmental DNA time-series, and exploration of novel environmental DNA sample types. The latter includes our recent study demonstrating that airborne environmental DNA can be used to detect terrestrial vertebrates.

Your job
You will work on the newly funded Carlsberg Foundation Young Researcher Fellowship awarded to Associate Professor Kristine Bohmann to form a research team dedicated to establish the use of airborne environmental DNA for terrestrial vertebrate monitoring. In addition to state-of-the-art environmental DNA laboratory and computational workflows, the team will bridge disciplines through collaboration with a strong group of national and international collaborators to fine-tune the technique, expand it to natural environments, and apply it to biodiversity studies and standardised surveys.
You will take an active part in the overall team’s work and will work with both national and international collaborators and team members. You will work especially close with the team members based in Copenhagen.
The project involves further development of the technology for use in natural settings, exploration of challenges, opportunities and limitations, and the use of metabarcoding of airborne environmental DNA for vertebrate detection in applied contexts. This can include design and optimisation of air samplers, design of experiments in different natural ecosystems as well as in more controlled settings and comparison to existing monitoring methods. There will be flexibility to shape the postdoc fellowship within this framework.

Profile

We have upcoming opportunities for enthusiastic and capable graduates to assist with ecological surveys and translocations, centered on Great Crested Newts, bats and reptiles. Previous experience of conducting surveys for protected species is advantageous but not essential, as full training will be provided. DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University's Department of Wildlife invites applications for one full-time temporary faculty position in Vertebrate Ecology for academic year 2017/2018. The initial appointment will be for the Fall 2017 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2018 will be contingent upon budget, programmatic need and satisfactory performance evaluation.

Professional Qualifications: An earned M.S. or equivalent in Wildlife, Ecology, Conservation or related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. An earned Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the areas listed above from an accredited college or university is preferred.



The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:



• Evidence of, or potential for, effective undergraduate teaching and teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
• Expertise with ecology, conservation and management of vertebrates;
• Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds; and
• Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses.



At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. Professional Duties: Instructional assignments may include: Principles of Wildlife Management, Wildlife Conservation, Ecology of Wildlife Habitats (wetlands), Wildlife Ethology, Senior Thesis, and Conservation and Management of a taxonomic group consistent with candidate's expertise (e.g., herptiles). Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues.

Vertebrate field biologist. Candidate must be broadly trained in biology, and have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences.  Post-doctoral research or teaching experience strongly preferred.  Successful
candidate will be committed to teaching undergraduates and to developing a research program that involves undergraduates. A research lab in our modern facility and initial startup funds will be
provided.  Teaching duties include upper division general ecology and vertebrate biology courses with laboratories, for majors.  In addition, all biology faculty assist with introductory level courses
for biology majors.   The teaching load is 9 contact hours per semester.  Candidates with research expertise in any area of field biology will be considered.
