Field Assistant Orangutan Behavior 2024

We are looking for a field research assistant to help collect observational behavioral data for my Ph.D. project on curiosity  and cognition in wild orangutans at the Development and  Evolution of Cognition Research group at the Max Planck Institute  of Animal Behavior. The data will be collected on wild orangutans  from October 2024 - October 2025 (12-month field stay). There is  an option of combining this position with a Master's project, given  that the student is enrolled and officially supervised at a  University.

The Project

Curiosity plays a key role in learning and innovation. However, the interplay between curiosity and

cognitive performance remains poorly understood. With this project, we aim to investigate the factors

that affect curiosity and problem-solving in wild orangutans to ultimately shed light on how the two

traits are connected on the developmental and evolutionary levels.

Details

The data will be collected at a field site in Indonesia. The research area is a peat swamp forest, meaning

that most of the forest floor is flooded throughout the year. Living conditions are basic, with limited

access to electricity and phone signal reception. There is limited personal space, and the candidate

will share their room with other assistants or researchers. Food will be provided at camp, mostly

consisting of rice, eggs, and a limited range of fruits and vegetables that will be prepared by a local

cook. The work includes long working days collecting data from dawn until dusk. A high level of

physical fitness is required as the applicant will walk up to 10km a day while carrying heavy equipment,

also on rainy days. We are looking for an excellent observer who can stay focused and motivated for

long periods and over repetitive tasks. Walking in the forest is difficult and tiring, continuously

surrounded by mosquitoes and other insects and often wading through flooded areas. In addition to

data collection, the assistant will clean, label, and store data and equipment which requires detail

orientation and organizational skills.

In the forest, we always work in teams with researchers and/or local assistants. Teamwork skills are

essential; the candidate must be able to communicate in a clear and assertive style, while also being

patient, flexible, and highly sensitive to cultural differences.

Before fieldwork can be started, the assistant must complete all visa and research permit processes;

including an up to four weeks stay in a local city. By the time of their departure, the candidate must

be up to date with required vaccinations, including COVID-19.

* Degree in Biology, Comparative psychology, or a related field and high interest in animal behavior

* Fluent in spoken and written English skills, willingness to learn the local language Bahasa

Following this, the assistant should be confident in working independently with local field assistants.

Study site:
The study site is situated in a scenic primary forest, with an abundance of endemic and endangered flora and fauna, including a dense population of the Critically Endangered Sumatran Orangutan. There are snakes, and other potentially dangerous wildlife that the assistant may encounter and must respect. Field conditions are mentally and physically challenging, with risks of tropical diseases. Even in the dry season, the forest floor is flooded to at least ankle depth, meaning constantly wet feet. The assistant will live in basic traditional wooden outbuildings, alongside local field staff, and occasional international students. Food is mostly rice and vegetable-based dishes prepared by a camp chef. Phone signal and internet connection is very limited, but there are regular trips to local villages for supplies and phone signal. The assistant must be comfortable living within nature, with limited luxuries and connections to the outside world.

Role and responsibility:
Prior to fieldwork, the applicant must also complete the relevant visa and research permit processes in Jakarta and Medan, which can take around 4 weeks, with help from our Indonesian counterparts. Applicants must take advice from Travel Health Specialists for medication and be up to date with vaccinations such as COVID19, Hepatitis, Yellow Fever, Tuberculosis.
Applicants are expected to follow orangutans from dawn until dusk, alongside local field staff, taking behavioural data, spatial data, and photographs for identification, taking rest days as necessary. Computer-based work will include inputting and cleaning data.Experience/skills:
· Strong interest in scientific research.
· Willingness and confidence to work in a remote and physically demanding field site.
· Physically fit to endure long and rainy days in the field.
· Experience with conducting fieldwork (Remote tropical fieldwork preferred).

Hosted by the Palaeoanthropology section of the Institute for Archaeological Sciences, the growing Freigeist Research Group “Pathways to Language” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and led by Dr. Marlen Fröhlich is currently looking for a
PhD student – Orang-utan Communication (f/m/d, 65%, E13 TV-L)
to study the coordination of social action in Sumatran orang-utans (Pongo abelii) living in wild and captive settings. This project is fully funded for four years and will be carried out in cooperation with the Development and Evolution of Cognition group at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (led by Dr. Caroline Schuppli).
Project summary
Arguably the most powerful social tool in the animal kingdom, language may have evolved as an adaptation to a new demand: the coordination of joint action. Coordinated joint action requires highly flexible adjustments in communicative behaviour regarding social context, interaction partner and ecological settings. Are the evolutionary roots of this plasticity to be found in our closest living relatives, the great apes? This hypothesis remains to be tested, because most comparative work focuses on population- or species-level variation rather than variation on the individual level. To tease apart variation on an individual, group and species level, we will gather comparative observational and experimental datasets on the coordination of joint activities in great apes and humans. The successful applicant will study social interactions among orang-utans in wild (Suaq, North Sumatra, Indonesia) and captive (various zoos in Europe) research settings.
Candidate profile
We seek an enthusiastic PhD candidate with experience in collecting and analysing behavioural and/or experimental data in primates. Ideally, this candidate will have fieldwork experience in tropical forests and under challenging field conditions, as well as good writing skills. We can only consider applicants with a MSc degree in Biology, Biological Anthropology, Comparative Psychology or a related field. Proficiency in English is required, some knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is beneficial. Our research is highly collaborative, hence we are looking for a team player who is ready to temporarily live with limited personal space and is respectful of cultural differences.

The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS) is one of the largest natural history museums in Germany dedicated to studying and documenting the evolution of organisms and ecosystems. One focus of research within the Department of Zoology is on the evolution of tarsiers, tiny Southeast Asian primates.
We seek an experienced and highly motivated researcher (m/f/d) in the area of primatology. The successful candidate will be expected to focus on links between population dynamics and the phylogeny of Sulawesi tarsiers (Tarsius spp.) and to test several hypotheses related to the taxonomy and demography of selected species. The projects will draw upon more than 20 years of tarsier research by our group (PI Dr. Stefan Merker) and a large collection of DNA samples curated at the SMNS. Depending on the COVID-19 situation, studies may include field work on Sulawesi. The postdoc will not be required to teach.

The successful candidate is expected to have

• a doctoral/PhD degree in biology, with a focus on primatology or mammal biogeography

PhD in coral reef fisheries (USA)

Background: Gear-based fisheries restrictions are an effective alternative to marine protected areas that may be tailored to the local social-ecological context, thus allowing a design that is more tolerable for fishers. To properly manage a multi-gear fishery, however, there must be an understanding of the social motivations and ecological impacts of different harvesting strategies. This research seeks to examine how different fishing gears influence social-ecological interactions through the synthesis and modeling of existing data from coral reef fisheries in Indonesia.

Opportunity: We have a fully funded PhD position available in the Humphries Lab at the University of Rhode Island (URI) for an excellent student to undertake the proposed research on coral reef fisheries in Indonesia. The candidate will be expected to start September 2016. The salary is based on a research assistantship and is approximately $22,000 per year with full benefits. The ideal candidate will be highly self-motivated and have a strong academic background in ecology and/or fisheries (e.g., MS degree) with an emphasis on modeling.
