Details: Swifts are declining by approximately 5% a year and their numbers have more than halved in the UK in the last 30 years, placing them on the red list of birds of conservation concern. Swifts nest primarily within the structure of buildings by accessing safe spaces within the building fabric through holes and gaps in the exterior of the building. Often these holes and gaps are a result of decay, repeated temperature and/or humidity and general deterioration. When buildings are repaired or renovated these gaps are often blocked as materials are replaced and this is the main driver of the fall in Swift numbers as such works prevent access to their nests. Identifying the location of Swift colonies allows us to work with property owners to protect these colonies as well as provide supplementary nest boxes in these areas. We have a poor understanding of Swift populations in over 85% of the settlements in the Derbyshire Dales and this represents a huge logistical challenge if we are to conserve this species. This role is intended to help fill this knowledge gap. Working closely with the Community Engagement Coordinator and combining professional surveying expertise with the ability to recruit, train and motivate teams of volunteers the successful candidate will:Establish, lead and manage a close-knit, effective team to deliver an effective project to identify swift colonies, record sites and mitigate for risks;
establish a network of self-managed programme of activities and events including volunteer survey teams across the region.
identify the location of key populations of Swifts, ascertain the risk of site loss and manage the optimal location, design and implementation of mitigation and conservation schemes.
assist with developing a network of citizen science projects intended to monitor the long-term success of the mitigation schemes.

This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution towards increasing our understanding of the status of Swifts in this region as well as establishing a blueprint for Swift conservation in general.

African elephants are keystone species, shaping the ecosystems they inhabit. Their survival hinges on access to freshwater sources, making them acutely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This PhD project delves into the intricacies of this relationship, exploring the combined effects of climate change on the availability and quality of water that sustains these charismatic megafaunas, and the potential for human-elephant conflict over this critical resource, with both conservation and public health implications. The project breaks new ground by embracing a uniquely multidisciplinary approach, integrating climatology, hydrology, remote sensing, wildlife conservation, movement ecology, and public health. This comprehensive strategy will provide a holistic understanding of how shifting climate dynamics could jeopardize elephants’ access to essential water resources, while also increasing the likelihood of conflict with human populations. The project’s framework comprises distinct yet interconnected components. It commences with an examination of historical climate data, establishing a foundation for understanding climatic trends in key elephant habitats. These insights are then woven into climate models that project future changes under various climate scenarios and the potential for conflict with human populations at key ‘hotspots’ which will be identified using the collected data. Collaborations with conservation organizations and local stakeholders ensure that the project remains anchored in the practical realities of elephant habitat utilization. Ultimately, “Thirsting Giants” merges scientific insight with actionable conservation strategies. By unravelling the complex connections between climate change, water availability, and human interactions the project empowers stakeholders to devise adaptive management plans crucial for safeguarding not only African elephants but also the ecosystems they shape, and the human populations with whom they share the landscape. In confronting the urgent challenges presented by a changing climate, this project stands as a beacon of hope for the future of these awe-inspiring giants of the African landscape.

Eligibility. This project would be suitable for students with a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level, or equivalent, in environmental sciences, geography, or a relevant biological discipline, such as ecology, zoology, conservation biology or animal behaviour. Candidates that have a Masters Degree and/or experience in ecological research are strongly encouraged to apply, as are those with a firm grounding and interest in large herbivore ecology, wildlife conservation and the quantitative analysis of spatial datasets. Although not essential, it would be beneficial for the student to have some experience of using a programming language such as Python, R, or MATLAB, and some familiarity with Arc-GIS mapping software. It will also be an advantage to have good communication skills, a practical attitude, and to be pro-active and self-motivated.

The role
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's WildGenes team are looking for a Research Assistant. Based at Edinburgh Zoo, the team uses genetic data to inform the conservation of 10-15 species annually. This role will involve supporting our research scientists in the analysis of genetic datasets. You will also be required to deliver towards reports for our conservation partners and input into project discussions at various stages. A flexible approach will be required with a range of different project opportunities available depending on the successful candidates experience but there will likely to be a focus on native species, including invertebrates. However, RZSS has an aim to aid in the restoration of 50 species by 2030, so there will be a range of future project opportunities. You will be expected to work closely with the analysis team but also alongside our onsite genetics lab team that generates the datasets and our biobank that provides long-term preservation of genetic material. It is a full-time 3-year fixed term role working 37.5 hours per week.

Who we are looking for
The successful candidate will hold an MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline plus job experience in a relevant role. Ideally, they will have experience in the bioinformatic analysis of genetic datasets but also knowledge of standard molecular genetic laboratory techniques and the preservation of DNA. They will also have excellent communication skills for working with project partners including those in the university, zoo and conservation sectors.

Salary
The position sits within Band D (Starting salary between £26,610 - £27,354 with future salary progression up to £30,592 per annum)

Fieldwork Research Assistant – Orangutan behaviourI am seeking a hard-working and enthusiastic research assistant to assist with fieldwork for a PhD project on Juvenile Sumatran Orangutans, starting in October 2023. The field site is located in a primary tropical peat swamp forest in Indonesia, and part of the SUAQ Project. The assistant will locate and follow habituated orangutans throughout the forest for around 12h per day, collecting behavioural and spatial data. The assistant will be trained in the field for data collection, including instantaneous sampling of behaviour, and spatial data collection using handheld GPS units. Following this, the assistant should be confident in working independently with local field assistants.

Study site:
The study site is situated in a scenic primary forest, with an abundance of endemic and endangered flora and fauna, including a dense population of the Critically Endangered Sumatran Orangutan. There are snakes, and other potentially dangerous wildlife that the assistant may encounter and must respect. Field conditions are mentally and physically challenging, with risks of tropical diseases. Even in the dry season, the forest floor is flooded to at least ankle depth, meaning constantly wet feet. The assistant will live in basic traditional wooden outbuildings, alongside local field staff, and occasional international students. Food is mostly rice and vegetable-based dishes prepared by a camp chef. Phone signal and internet connection is very limited, but there are regular trips to local villages for supplies and phone signal. The assistant must be comfortable living within nature, with limited luxuries and connections to the outside world.

Role and responsibility:
Prior to fieldwork, the applicant must also complete the relevant visa and research permit processes in Jakarta and Medan, which can take around 4 weeks, with help from our Indonesian counterparts. Applicants must take advice from Travel Health Specialists for medication and be up to date with vaccinations such as COVID19, Hepatitis, Yellow Fever, Tuberculosis.
Applicants are expected to follow orangutans from dawn until dusk, alongside local field staff, taking behavioural data, spatial data, and photographs for identification, taking rest days as necessary. Computer-based work will include inputting and cleaning data.Experience/skills:
· Strong interest in scientific research.
· Willingness and confidence to work in a remote and physically demanding field site.
· Physically fit to endure long and rainy days in the field.
· Experience with conducting fieldwork (Remote tropical fieldwork preferred).
· Sensitivity and social adaptability to Indonesian culture.
· Some experience using behavioural ethograms.
· Some experience using GPS devices.
· Fluent English, and willingness to learn some basic Indonesian.Contract: a commitment of 12 months is required.
Return plane tickets to home country, vaccinations, food and lodging at camp, and project related fees are covered by the project, upon successful completion of the project. The Aspinall Foundation, a British charity founded by the late John Aspinall, in cooperation with the governments of the Republic of Congo (since 1987) and of Gabon (since 1998), set up the Projet Protection des Gorilles (PPG) for the overall goal to work with local partners for the conservation of indigenous endangered species in general, and of gorillas in particular.
To achieve this goal, PPG is involved in several distinct but related activities in the two range countries:
The reduction of the trade in orphan gorillas, and consequently the illegal bush-meat trade, by repression (facilitating confiscation of illegally held gorillas by the national governments) and by prevention (information, awareness, education).
The rehabilitation of confiscated orphan gorillas into a natural forest habitat, for the conservation and individual welfare of these ‘ambassadors’ of their species.
The reintroduction of captive-born gorillas into protected areas within the former range of the species.
The management of these areas for the restoration and the protection of their natural resources.
The promotion of local, national and international awareness of the threats facing the species.
The development of sustainable conservation-minded activities which provide economic benefits on a local and national scale.
TAF fund and manage the western lowland gorilla reintroduction project in the Batéké Plateau National Park, Projet Protection des Gorilles (PPG Gabon) and has been working in close collaboration with the Gabonese Government to ensure the protection of the national park since its creation in 2002. TAF are also responsible for the management of the “Reserve Naturelle des Gorilles de Lesio-Louna” (RNGLL) in collaboration with the Congolese government - situated northwest of Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, the “Projet Lésio-Louna” (PLL) is a western lowland gorilla reintroduction and protected area management project.
Responsibilities of PPG Director
Ensure gorilla care is maintained at the highest possible standard, for both rewilded and in habituation phase
Ensure regular and proactive project camp maintenance / management
Pre and post release monitoring, via camera trap data collection and direct observation for gorillas and all other species.
Ensure timely accounting and reporting on all financial expenditures and monitor overall budget management with the UK-based TAF director and manager of overseas projects.
Coordinate logistics at the Project base camps and satellite bases (eco-guard posts, research camps, etc.).
Assure open and regular communication with the TAF director of overseas projects concerning program activities, donor ideas or contacts, and other related administration issues.
Arrange project purchasing, logistics, monthly payroll, and other administrative activities
Ensure thorough and regular inventories of existing Project equipment and infrastructure.
Prepare project budget proposals for each of the project components and annual budget proposals for the TAF director of overseas projects and work with TAF UK team to secure supplemental funding sources, by the way of grant application for the Project activities where appropriate.
Ensure fulfillment of reporting and administrative requirements with the TAF UK office.
Fulfill media requests from UK office
Management and monitoring of staff absence including holiday, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave etc.
Collaborate with any respective government agencies, accordingly.
Recruitment, training, and management of staff. This will include annual reviews of staff performance, and responsibility for managing employee grievances and implementing disciplinary procedures in instances of poor conduct or poor performance/capability as required implementing the activities outlined in the Project’s overall objectives.
Explore and pursue strategic legal agreements with government bodies and other parties necessary to achieve the project’s objectives.

The Research Training Group (RTG) 2300 ‘Enrichment of European beech forests with conifers: impacts of functional traits on ecosystem functioning’ (EnriCo) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen in Germany, is currently inviting applications for

starting on October 1, 2023. The salary is based on TV-L E13 and amounts 65 % of a full position for PhD candidates in life science and associated topics and 75 % in statistics. The positions are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for 3 years.

The interdisciplinary Research Training Group 2300 was established in 2017. The PhD students enrolled in this program investigate ecological challenges and societal demands on forests in a changing climate. The program focuses on European temperate forests. A central goal is to uncover the impact of mixed compared to monospecific forests on ecosystem functions and processes with a special focus on the importance of functional traits. Our research approaches involve field studies in European beech, Norway spruce and Douglas fir forests and their mixtures, experimental studies to uncover cause-effect relationships, and statistical as well as economic analyses. We hypothesize that mixtures of European beech with conifers show higher functional diversity than pure European beech stands, resulting in higher resilience and providing multiple ecosystem services.

The RTG 2300 offers a vibrant academic environment, joint supervision of PhD candidates by thesis committees, and a structured study program with many opportunities to improve scientific and personal skills. The following research groups are offering PhD projects: silviculture, tree physiology (mycorrhiza), plant ecology, soil sciences, animal ecology, wildlife sciences, forest nature conservation, forest modelling, forest economics, and spatial forest structures as well as applied statistics. The CCF facility provides housing and veterinary care for cheetahs confiscated by the Somaliland government authorities from the illegal wildlife trade. The position requires the Manager to work with a team of local and international keepers, veterinarians, and vet techs under the supervision of the Project Director, Dr. Laurie Marker, and the Project Manager. The position supervises a team of animal keepers and volunteers, works with a team of veterinarians, and assists with the coordination and conducting of environmental education initiatives. Additional duties will include but are not limited to all aspects of the daily management of the cheetahs including cleaning, feeding, enrichment, detailed record keeping, behavioral observations, diet preparation, general maintenance, husbandry training, and assisting with veterinary care. The Manager will ensure a high standard of animal care at the CCF Centre and assist with the development of the cheetah facility at a new sanctuary being developed in Geed Deeble where cheetahs are to be housed, as it relates to animal care and management.
Main duties:
Animal Management
● Manage all aspects of animal husbandry, veterinary care, enrichment, and operant conditioning
● Management, supervision, and training of the animal caretaker staff and veterinary staff
● Evaluation and further development of cheetah management protocols, in cooperation with network of
international experts
● Cooperation with Somaliland government authorities
● Coordinate the movement of animals in CCF facilities from the point of intake
● Interact with local stakeholders, such as project partners, professional associations and visiting guests of
the Somaliland government
● Control and develop plans and implement new zoological strategies and concepts relating to animal
safety and welfare
● Record-keeping and photo documentation of the animals in the project
● Other duties assigned by the Executive Director or Project Manager
Requirements:
● Willing to relocate to Hargeisa, Somaliland
● -5+ years animal husbandry experience
● Ability to follow protocols and policy and help review and develop new materials
● Calm demeanor, with good communications skills and able to work and live effectively with a team of co-
workers
● High level of responsibility and personal drive
● Experience in delivering environmental and wildlife education programs
● Driver’s License with good driving record and the ability to operate vehicles with manual transmission
● Effective written and verbal communication skills, must be fluent in written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications:
● Degree in animal sciences (biology, zoology), environmental education, animal management or a
comparable subject
● Experience in the care of captive large carnivores, preferably big cat species
● 3+ years Managerial Experience
● Experience with Microsoft Excel
