Le pôle Pro­tec­tion de la Na­ture
Pôle his­to­rique des ac­tions de conser­va­tion qui sont au cœur de l’ob­jet LPO, le pôle Pro­tec­tion de la Na­ture a pour mis­sions la co­or­di­na­tion de pro­grammes na­tio­naux et in­ter­na­tio­naux de conser­va­tion de la bio­di­ver­sité, la ges­tion et co­ges­tion d’es­paces pro­té­gés, le trai­te­ment des pres­sions an­thro­piques (Ener­gies re­nou­ve­lables, agri­cul­ture, pêche…) et l’amé­lio­ra­tion et le trai­te­ment des connais­sances re­la­tives à nos thé­ma­tiques. L’en­semble de ces mis­sions est ré­parti entre quatre ser­vices.
Le pré­sent re­cru­te­ment concerne le SEP (Ser­vice Es­paces Pro­té­gés) qui hé­berge les thé­ma­tiques liées à la ges­tion d’es­paces pro­té­gés et plus par­ti­cu­liè­re­ment la RNN de Moëze-Olé­ron. Si­tuée entre l'île d'Olé­ron et le conti­nent (Moëze et Saint-Froult), elle oc­cupe une sur­face de 6 700 hec­tares et pro­tège des mi­lieux lit­to­raux, des prai­ries hu­mides et prés-sa­lés.
De­puis 2001 fonc­tionne la sta­tion de ba­guage de Plai­sance / com­mune de Saint-Froult de mi-juillet à fin oc­tobre. Cette sta­tion a en­suite re­joint le pro­gramme na­tio­nal CRBPO dit « HALTE MI­GRA­TOIRE » puis de­puis 2016, les pro­to­coles « PHENO » et « SE­JOUR ».
Le site ac­cueille éga­le­ment des aides ba­gueurs en cours de for­ma­tion (une qua­ran­taine sur la pé­riode) et des stages de for­ma­tion pour la pré­pa­ra­tion au per­mis de ba­guer.
Ces mo­ni­to­rings de cap­tures sont pré­vus par les plans de ges­tion suc­ces­sifs de l’es­pace pro­tégé, ils visent à ali­men­ter la base de don­nées na­tio­nale CRBPO et ob­te­nir des jeux de don­nées pour amé­lio­rer la connais­sance et la ges­tion du site.
Le nombre d’oi­seaux ba­gués du­rant cette cam­pagne avoi­sine les 10 000 et concerne prin­ci­pa­le­ment les pas­se­reaux ter­restres (50 à 70 es­pèces sur la pé­riode).

Sous la res­pon­sa­bi­lité du conser­va­teur de la ré­serve na­tu­relle et du ba­gueur ti­tu­laire res­pon­sable de la sta­tion de ba­guage, vous aurez en charge :D’as­su­rer le fonc­tion­ne­ment de la sta­tion de ba­guage le matin (1h00 avant le lever du jour à 12/13h00) chaque jour de météo pro­pice (week-end, et jours fé­riés in­clus)

Field assistants – Avian behavioural ecology New Caledonia

We are looking for 2-3 field assistants to work on avian behavioural ecology in New Caledonia. The research is part of a long-term study on the co-evolutionary arms race between the Fan-tailed Gerygone and the Shining Bronze-cuckoo conducted by the Behavioural Ecology Group at the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (for more info see Attisano et al, 2018 SciRep 8:10359; Attisano et al., 2021, CurrZool, 67:653-663; Attisano et al., 2023, JAnimEcol, 92:30-43). Postgraduate students are particularly encouraged to apply as there are possibilities to develop research projects on co-evolutionary arms race, spatial ecology, avian breeding ecology and vocal repertoire and communication.
When: up to 2-3 months between October - December 2023, exact dates and duration to be agreed.
Where: main island of Grande Terre, in managed nature reserve with tropical savannah and dry forest habitats.

Duties: nest searching and monitoring, mist-netting and banding, data collection and  analysis, maintenance of field equipment.

Requisites: experience of behavioural research with wild birds in particular nest searching, nest monitoring, mist-netting, bird banding and use of photo traps. Additional training will be provided. Fieldwork is physically demanding (UV exposure, heat, humidity, rain) therefore physical fitness, enthusiasm and self-motivation are essential. Ability to work independently or as part of a team and to share living spaces is also essential. Previous experience of working in the tropics, driving license and knowledge of French are desirable.

Working conditions: 8-10 hours daily for 5 days a week on average, up to 10-12 hours and 6-7 days a week during the peak of the breeding season. Early morning start. Selected applicants will need to arrange their own travel to and from New Caledonia. The project will provide free accommodation and a monthly wage to cover food costs and living expenses.

Expenses-paid field assistant positions for a project investigating social interactions of Siberian jays in Swedish Lapland

For the period 25 July to 15 October 2023, we are looking for 2 highly motivated, expenses-paid field volunteers to assist with our field project (principal investigator Dr. Michael Griesser, University of Konstanz). Our current project investigates the drivers of variation in social interactions of Siberian jays. The work of the field volunteers will be to help with catching, and colour-ringing birds, sampling blood, conducting population censuses and behavioral observations, assist in experiments and managing data. This work will provide insights into a long-term study system and will be carried out in managed and pristine boreal forests.
Please note that daytime temperatures at the end of the season can be as low as -10C. Fieldwork at times involves walking up to 15km per day.

Qualifications:
  1. Field work experience, involving behavioural observations and experiments
  2. Bird ringing and mist-netting experience
  3. Ability to work in small team and sociable personality
  4. Driver’s license (manual transmission)
  5. Fluent in English
We will cover accommodation, travel expenses from and to the study site (up to 400 euros return), as well as on-site living expenses (food).

2 crew members will assist one graduate student to capture, GPS tag, and monitor Pinyon Jay populations through target capturing, count and behavioral surveys, habitat data collection, remote telemetry data collection, and deployment of audio recording units (ARU). Expected duties also include, but not limited to assist with capture and banding of Pinyon Jays, including deployment of GPS transmitters using leg-loop harnesses; assist in the collection of biological samples from captured Pinyon Jays in the form of fecal matter, nail clipping, feathers, and blood; driving for long distances; hiking long distances in mountainous/rugged terrain to sites and identifying Pinyon Jays by auditory and sight (counts and behavioral data collection).

Qualifications:

Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license, with a clean driving history, and preferably 4-wheel drive vehicle experience at the time of employment. Applicant must be able to work a flexible schedule, with weekends and holidays possible depending on weather and data collection needs. Applicant must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and willing to work outdoors in harsh conditions in remote areas. Applicant must be able to work alone and within a team setting and get along with others as a successful candidate will be living with co-workers. Preference will be given to applicants with avian banding, handling, survey work histories, telemetry experience, and CPR/First AID/AED or Wilderness First Aid certification.

Fieldworker/ringer for spring 2023 offer


We are looking for a fieldworker for the spring season 2023, from March 14. Duration: 4-8 weeks.


We are at the far end of the Lista Peninsula at Lista Lighthouse in Farsund municipality (Norway). The station conducts migratory bird monitoring by net trapping, and daily migration counts of both seabirds and passerines. About. 1000 birds are ringed each spring.

Necessary requirements for applicants are:
* ringing license or experience in counting birds on sea migration
* willingness to work early mornings, and sometimes long days in the field, occasionally under demanding weather conditions
* a positive attitude and willingness to work in a team with others

Compensation under agreement. It is possible to spend the night at the station for free.

Short-term Field Assistank: Tree, insect, & bird ecology - Spring 2023

We are seeking to appoint 6-7 field assistant to work on the Wytham Tit Project in spring 2023.


Three or four 2-month posts will assist with the collection of the long-term great tit and blue tit breeding data. Duties will include (i) collecting standardised data from nest-box breeding populations of tits, (ii) ringing parents and nestlings, (iii) collecting great tit song recording and (iv) inputting data collected in the field. These two-month positions with run from approximately

Monday 3’d April to Friday 2nd June.



Three 3-month posts will assist with the collection of phenological data for trees and phytophagous insects. Duties will include (i) assisting with drone flights to collect remotely- sensed tree phenology data, (ii), collecting data on the timing of spring budburst of deciduous trees and the abundance of phytophagous insects, (iii) carrying out habitat surveys, and (iv) inputting data collected in the field. These three-month positions will run from approximately Monday 6th March to Friday 2"d June.



All fieldwork will take place in Wytham Woods, near Oxford. The work is variable in intensity and will at times require long (12 hour+) days in the field, and working some weekend days, but will be quieter towards the start and end of the season. Successful applicants can choose between having accommodation provided on site and receiving a salary of £1,750/£1,900 per month (single/shared bedrooms) or finding their own accommodation and receive a salary of £2,360 per month.



Successful candidates for the two-month posts must hold or be qualified to obtain a BTO ringing permit. For the three-month posts, experience collecting phenological data and working with drones is desirable, but not essential. Furthermore, all successful candidates must be able to demonstrate skill and enthusiasm for ecological research as well as experience of fieldwork under arduous conditions, and of both lone fieldwork and working as part of a team.

For the upcoming field season spring 2023 (4.3.-1.4.2023), we are looking for two highly motivated, expenses paid field volunteers to join our field project (main responsible PD Dr. Michael Griesser, University of Konstanz). Our current project investigates social interactions of Siberian jays. The work of the field volunteers will be to help with a population census, behavioural observations, catching and colour-ringing birds, blood sampling, and data management. This work will give insight into a long-term study system and will be carried out in managed and pristine boreal forests.

Observe that we can access the study site only on X-country skis, requiring X-country or down-hill skiing skills. Moreover, field work can be demanding at times, with temperatures falling below -25C at times.

Qualifications:
  1. Skiing skills (X-country or downhill)
  2. Preferably bird ringing and mist-netting experience
  3. Previous field experience
  4. Ability to work in small teams and sociable personality
  5. Driving license
  6. Fluent in English

Anticipated Period: August 21 - October 23, 2022

Commitment: Bird banding and observations (count period of 5.5 hours) daily for nine weeks, except on days with inclement weather, and general station maintenance

Rate of Pay: $500 stipend per week


St. Andrews Bird Banding Station (StABBS) has been catching and banding songbirds since June 1989. Over the past 33 years, 26,731 birds representing 103 species have been banded. These totals make it the longest running, most productive bird banding station in New Brunswick. StABBS is the only New Brunswick contributor to the nation-wide CMMN songbird-monitoring program and has been monitoring the Fall songbird migration on an annual basis since 2001. One can expect to catch a good variety of warblers, sparrows, flycatchers, vireos and thrushes, even the odd northern rarity at this small 12-net Station.

One to two experienced bird banders are needed for the fall migration-monitoring project at St. Andrews Bird Banding Station. Banders must have experience extracting birds from mist-nets, as well as handling and identifying passerines, unsupervised. Banders must be eligible to obtain a sub-permit to band birds. Two positions are open: one to start 21 August for five weeks and another to start around 25 September for four weeks. Accommodation, including lodging and weekday meals, is provided on the Huntsman Marine Science Centre campus (www.huntsmanmarine.ca) at no cost.

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre is a not-for-profit charity organization with a focus on ocean conservation and marine education and research. The Fundy Discovery Aquarium operates seasonally from May to October providing visitation and hands-on experiences for over 30,000 visitors annually. Huntsman also recently launched Huntsman Marine Experiences™ to provide greater interaction across a range of marine biology related activities for tourists to St. Andrews.

Responsibilities:

· Help setting up mist-nets at the start of the season and/or removing mist-nets at the end of the season

· Operate the banding station for 5.5 hours daily, including five hours of mist-netting

· Record banding/observations data and perform minor station maintenance (e.g., net mending and vegetation trimming)

· Prioritize bird safety above all and promptly report any concern

· Ensure all human and bird health, safety and security procedures are adhered

· Remain professional, friendly and passionate at all times with other staff and guests

· Maintain a neat, clean and organized work environment at all times

· Assist in any other related duties as required

· Opportunity to initiate and collaborate on research and education activities

· Opportunity for data entry in Bandit and report writing

Minimum Requirements:

· Strong bird banding, extraction, and identification skills

· Strong ability to work independently, unsupervised, and with integrity

· High standards of organization, detail orientation, and record keeping

· Eligibility to apply for sub-permit

· Enjoy working in an outdoor setting in various weather conditions

· Effective oral and written communication skills

· Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (if applicable), such as a face mask, for extended periods of time and follow instructions to appropriately sanitize on a regular basis due to COVID-19 public health requirements



Additional Assets:

· Experience with statistics and data entry

· Availability of own vehicle (eligible transportation costs will be reimbursed)

· Ability to communicate in French and English

· Enjoy researching, educating and writing report
