Two open PhD positions in Tanja Slotte's research group at Stockholm University, associated with two recently funded projects!!

Stockholm University is a leading European university in Sweden’s dynamic capital city. The University has more than 33,000 students, 1,600 doctoral students and 5,500 staff members active within the natural sciences and humanities. Research and education at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) is located in the Arrhenius Laboratories, situated at the University Campus at Frescati. Research spans a broad range of biological subject areas including ecology and evolution, ecotoxicology, marine biology, plant physiology, systematics, and environmental and climate science.

Presently around 100 people, including 35 PhD students and 10 postdocs, in 25 research groups work at DEEP. The research environment is characterized by its international focus and collaborative and stimulating working environment. The senior staff are both active researchers and teachers. They teach on many different courses that are part of biology education at both Bachelors and Masters level

The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences invites applications for two four-year PhD position part of the project in Prof. Tanja Slotte’s research group.

Postdoc en biología evolutiva de plantas (determinación sexual y cromosomas sexuales)

A postdoc in plant evolutionary biology is available in the research group of John Pannell in the Department of Ecology and Evolution, University of Lausanne. The postdoc is initially for one year, but could be extended for up to five years. The successful applicant will work on the comparative genomics of transitions in plant sexual systems and on the evolution of sex determination and sex chromosomes. Research will focus on one or both of two models that are well developed in the lab: the evolution of sexual systems and sex chromosomes in the European annual plant Mercurialis annua and its relatives; and the evolution of sex chromosomes and sexual dimorphism in the South African genus Leucadendron. The genus Mercurialis displays remarkable variation in the expression of combined versus separate sexes among species and natural populations of the species M. annua. We have also observed rapid transitions between dioecy and monoecy in M. annua under experimental conditions and now aim to investigate the genomic architecture of these transitions. The genus Leucadendron is fully dioecious, but its species vary dramatically in their levels of sexual dimorphism in terms of morphology, life history and patterns of gene expression. Recent analysis suggests that the entire genus of approximately 80 species has the same XY sex-determination system, but that the sex chromosomes have experienced different rates of gene trafficking.

Research scope and skills sought 
We are looking for a postdoc with an interest and skills in the generation and especially the analysis of genome and transcriptome data to test evolutionary and population genetic hypotheses. The postdoc will work on projects currently running in the lab, as summarised above, but his or her specific research can be tailored to personal interests and training objectives. He or she should be able to demonstrate a strong conceptual foundation in evolutionary biology and population genetics and should be equipped with skills in bioinformatics and genome sequence and gene expression analysis. An interest in plant evolution specifically is not essential but could be an advantage. The successful candidate should also have good communication and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work in a team.

Host department and university 
The Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Lausanne hosts a broad range of research groups, and its members enjoy a lively intellectual and social life. Although the University of Lausanne is francophone, the department is highly international, and all its research activity and seminars are conducted in English. The University has seven faculties and approximately 14,300 students and 3,900 researchers from over 120 countries. It is situated on a beautiful campus on the shore of Lake Geneva, and is close to the Swiss and French Alps.

The Department for Crop Sciences, Division of Plant Breeding Methodology, at the Georg-August-University Göttingen is offering a position as a

Postdoctoral scientist (Research assistant)
- salary group 13 TV-L -

for a three-year fixed-term duration. The position is full-time (39.8 hours per week).

The research assignment for the postdoc is to perform experimental evolution studies and genomic prediction using maize. The hired scientist will have access to genotype and phenotype data from a replicated maize experimental evolution population and will be tasked with leading the ongoing field, lab and analysis of that population. The opportunity to initiate experimental evolution research on model species such as algae may also be explored, depending on the interests of the applicant. All research will be conducted under the mentorship and supervision of the Göttingen Professor of Plant Breeding Methodology. Limited teaching at the Bachelor's and Master's level is also expected.


The tasks include:



Research in the area of ​​​​​​quantitative, evolutionary and population genetics including:

o Selection mapping, GWAS and Genomic Prediction using genotypic and phenotypic data collected from a maize experimental evolution population

o Experimental maize field management including planning, planting, phenotyping and harvesting

o Lab work including DNA extraction and library preparation for genotyping

· Teaching as assigned by the Professor of Plant Breeding Methodology

· Mentoring Bachelor, Master and PhD theses

· Writing and publishing scientific manuscripts (approximately 2 publications per year expected)

· Participation in scientific meetings

· Assistance in fulfilling the general tasks of the chair



Your profile requires:



· A PhD in plant breeding, animal breeding, quantitative genetics, population genetics, evolutionary genetics or a related field

· Thorough knowledge of quantitative genetics

· Experience in advanced statistics and data analysis

· Coding skills and experience including R and Unix/Linux scripting

· Experience and interest in lab work, or an eagerness to learn

· Experience and interest in crop field work, on an eagerness to learn

· A proven record of publishing scientific manuscripts

· Excellent or fluent English skills

Postdoc on plant genomics (UC Davis, USA)

Post-doctoral position with Sharon Strauss (UC Davis) and
Maren Friesen (MSU) on the role of symbionts in promoting coexistence
between sympatric, congeneric clover species. We will examine rhizobia and
other soil biota in determining Trifolium transcriptomes and outcomes of
interactions between, and niche differences influencing coexistence of, 8
native annual Trifolium species at the Bodega Marine Reserve and across
California.

The Bodega Marine Coastal Reserve is a two-hour drive from Davis. Post-doc
will reside in Davis, but should expect to spend some overnights at the
Bodega Marine lab for field surveys and experiments. Post-doc must be able
to drive a car.

Post-doc will be responsible for field experiments, descriptive field
collections of traits and nodules and surveys documenting co-occurrence
patterns of species, as well as greenhouse experiments manipulating
rhizobia, soil and neighboring plant species. Students and a technician will
aid in these data collections. Opportunities are available to develop
expertise in transcriptomes and genomic analyses. Phylogenetic analyses of
traits and niches will also be shared between Strauss and Friesen lab.

Post-doc will sit in Strauss lab at UC Davis and participate in lab
meetings, as well as in the vibrant ecological and evolutionary activities
at UC Davis, such as seminar series, etc.

Another post-doc (separate application) will sit in Friesen lab at MSU and
will be focused on rhizobial genomes and Trifolium transcriptomes. The post-
doc based in the Friesen lab will be responsible for the production and
analysis of large-scale next-generation sequencing datasets in collaboration
with a technician and graduate student.  Together, the ecological and
genomic datasets will be integrated with phylogenetic data to address
fundamental questions about the niche and species coexistence. The two labs
will collaborate and interact extensively.

Post-docs will receive mentoring on professional development from Strauss
and Friesen.

Start date is flexible.
