Research Fellow - Unravelling the role of genetic variation of beneficial arthropods in agroecosystems.

Duration: 3.5 years.

An enthusiastic, motivated, and creative postdoctoral Research Fellow is sought to join a collaborative team within the School of Biological Sciences to develop predictive process-based models on the effects of climate and land-use change on arthropods' genetic diversity and persistence in agro-ecosystems.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in theoretical evolution and/or ecology, strong programming skills, strong interest/knowledge of population genetics and interest in applying those skills to improve understanding and forecasting of species' responses to anthropogenic changes. The fellow will join Dr Greta Bocedi's team and a wider strong team of PIs, postdocs and postgraduate students developing and applying the RangeShifter platform (led by Dr Greta Bocedi, Prof Justin Travis and Prof Damaris Zurell at the University of Potsdam, in collaboration with Dr Lesley Lancaster), who are embedded within a global collaborative network that will maximize both the impact of the work and the advancement opportunities to the postdoctoral researcher. Further, the fellow will be part of the Centre of Ecological Genetics, an international collaboration between PIs from universities in Aarhus (DK), Helsinki (FI) and Aberdeen (UK), with Aberdeen leading the modelling component. The centre's research spans several topics in ecological and evolutionary research using molecular methods and statistical and process-based modelling.

The Research Training Group (RTG) 2300 ‘Enrichment of European beech forests with conifers: impacts of functional traits on ecosystem functioning’ (EnriCo) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen in Germany, is currently inviting applications for

starting on October 1, 2023. The salary is based on TV-L E13 and amounts 65 % of a full position for PhD candidates in life science and associated topics and 75 % in statistics. The positions are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for 3 years.

The interdisciplinary Research Training Group 2300 was established in 2017. The PhD students enrolled in this program investigate ecological challenges and societal demands on forests in a changing climate. The program focuses on European temperate forests. A central goal is to uncover the impact of mixed compared to monospecific forests on ecosystem functions and processes with a special focus on the importance of functional traits. Our research approaches involve field studies in European beech, Norway spruce and Douglas fir forests and their mixtures, experimental studies to uncover cause-effect relationships, and statistical as well as economic analyses. We hypothesize that mixtures of European beech with conifers show higher functional diversity than pure European beech stands, resulting in higher resilience and providing multiple ecosystem services.

The RTG 2300 offers a vibrant academic environment, joint supervision of PhD candidates by thesis committees, and a structured study program with many opportunities to improve scientific and personal skills. The following research groups are offering PhD projects: silviculture, tree physiology (mycorrhiza), plant ecology, soil sciences, animal ecology, wildlife sciences, forest nature conservation, forest modelling, forest economics, and spatial forest structures as well as applied statistics. Biodiversity Dynamics in Novel Ecosystems


Research area and project description:
This PhD project is part of the newly established Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. ECONOVO aims to provide new perspectives on widely emerging ecological novelty and seek out strategies for how to steer towards the most positive outcomes for the biosphere. Novel ecosystems (NEs) have species compositions and/or abiotic conditions without historical precedent and are assembling rapidly around the world. By the late 21st century most of Earths ecosystems are expected to be NEs. Key drivers are climate and atmospheric change, globalization and transportation of organisms, and extirpation of large-sized organisms. The spread of NEs is likely to profoundly affect biosphere functioning, but how so is poorly understood. To address this complex theme, ECONOVO will take an unparalleled, interdisciplinary approach, integrating Big Data and field-based ecology, satellite-based remote sensing, archaeology, paleoecology, and population genomics.

This PhD project will be part of ECONOVO research theme 2: Complexity restoration. We will test if restoring ecological complexity can enhance species diversity in NEs, with specific focus on trophic complexity linked to megafauna. In this project we will employ a combination of large-scale macroecological approaches combined with detailed field studies in South Africa. We will use study areas in South Africa to populate a gradient of ecological novelty, quantified using non-native plant species composition and dynamics, and intersect this with a gradient of trophic complexity, quantified using megafauna community composition and dynamics. The analysis will be repeated in two regions with contrasting ecosystem productivity and biogeographic setting. The large-scale approaches will rely on existing large data bases and state-of-the-art remote sensing data and techniques. The field component will include detailed measurements on vegetation structure using terrestrial LiDAR and overall biodiversity measurements focused on plants and potentially other taxa.

The project is embedded within ECONOVO and will require a high degree of collaboration with ECONOVO staff and external collaborators. The project is twinned with a parallel PhD project based in South Africa, and strong collaboration notably during fieldwork, is required.

Qualifications and specific competences:
While the overall aims of the PhD project are outlined, the candidate is expected and encouraged to contribute ideas and together with the supervisors and collaborators develop the research based on previous work and initial findings.

Applicants must have a relevant MSc degree in ecology, biology or equivalent and have graduated before the application deadline.

Applicants must have experience with quantitative ecological analyses and a strong willingness to further develop skills in spatial analyses and working with big data, including remote sensing data. Coding and data handling in R and Google Earth Engine will be essential to the project, and experience with these is an advantage.

Experience with field-based ecology is highly desirable and a willingness to perform fieldwork in beautiful but sometimes harsh environments is essential. Specific knowledge of plants or other taxonomic groups is an advantage. Experience with (terrestrial) laser scanning is an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills, strong potential to publish at a high international level, and have excellent command of English. International applicants who do not have English as their first language must prove excellent English language writing skills and fluency.

Postdoctoral position 24 months in landscape ecology in France: connectivity patterns and potential role of the French railways system for biodiversity

MINERVE is a large project led by SNCF Réseau (the French national railway system). It aims to create digital twins for the monitoring and construction of railway infrastructures, with the objective of performance and adaptation to the requirements of climate and ecological transitions. The main scientific partner of the project is Centrale Supélec, Paris Saclay University. The project includes a two-years postdoc position on the impact and possibly the benefits for biodiversity of the French railway system.

Linear railways infrastructure is associated with negative impacts on biodiversity, including the creation of a barrier to species movement and direct mortality of fauna. However, railways can also be designed and maintained to help to restore ecosystem function for a part of the flora and fauna. The French rail network consists of 30,000 km of track managed by the SNCF, the maintenance of which could be optimized to meet safety and regulatory constraints, but also to promote landscape connectivity and biodiversity.

The French railway is home to a variety of flora and fauna and provide a green corridor that can serve as a connector between different green zones of the landscape, or even protected areas, particularly in areas of intensive agriculture. The postdoc will study the complementarity of the railways with the other existing green corridors and protected areas for global landscape connectivity. The postdoc will also take into account the various regulatory protection perimeters in order to select sections with high biodiversity stakes, which can then be prioritized for biodiversity inventories as well as for receiving different types of maintenance. The postdoc will also work on the potential of the railways for biodiversity in a context of climate change, where species ranges are rapidly shifting northward in Europe, making their role as connectors particularly valuable.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in landscape ecology or environmental geography. Solid knowledge and demonstrated experience in statistical modelling, data management and GIS, Geographic Information System are key to the project. Written and oral communication skills in English are necessary, the ability to speak French would be appreciated although it is not a requirement.

NEs are spreading fast and are expected to be globally dominant by the late 21st century. Key drivers are climate change, globalization, and extirpation of large-sized organisms, resulting in ecosystems deviating from anything seen for millions of years. The spread of NEs is likely to affect biosphere functioning profoundly, but how so is poorly understood at present. To address this complex theme, ECONOVO will take an unparalleled, interdisciplinary approach, integrating Big Data and field-based ecology, satellite-based remote sensing, archaeology, paleoecology, and population genomics to bridge this crucial knowledge gap.

Starting Date and Period The position is for 2 years and is available from June 1, 2023, or soon thereafter.

Job description This postdoc project will be part of the ECONOVO research theme 1: Diversity Dynamics, focused on understanding biodiversity dynamics in novel ecosystems (NEs) past and present. This position is a macroecological position focused on present-day NEs at a global scale. While it is well documented that biotic assemblages are changing across Earth and at accelerating rates, links to rising ecological and climate novelty remain poorly understood. With this position, we aim to overcome this knowledge gap and test whether basic biodiversity theory can predict observed dynamics in globally emerging NEs. Building on our previous work, the postdoc will lead the mapping of NEs globally by mobilizing large data sets on species distributions of native and non-native plants and vertebrates and integrating them with geospatial data on novel environments. Based hereon, the postdoc will lead the development of predictive models of NEs and by coupling this mapping to biodiversity data assess how NEs impact to assess general NE impacts on species diversity, testing if dynamics are predictable from theory. The postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to the project’s public outreach and teaching, as well as collaborating with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and helping to solve problems in the postdoc’s area of expertise.

Your profile Applicants must have a PhD degree in ecology, geography, or equivalent; and have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment before the application deadline. Expertise in macroecology is expected, combined with solid geospatial/statistical modelling, and data architecture/management skills. The project will cover both plants and vertebrates, so experience with the ecology of plants, mammals and/or birds is an advantage. The successful candidate is expected to have strong collaborative skills, proven abilities to publish at a high international level, and have good command of English. International applicants who do not have English as their first language must demonstrate excellent English language writing skills and fluency.

The IEE Division Aquatic Ecology & Evolution and the Eawag Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Biogeochemistry in Kastanienbaum seek to recruit a Postdoc in Quantitative Paleolimnology.

The position is part of an SNSF funded project entitled “20,000 years of evolution and ecosystem dynamics in the world’s largest tropical lake reconstructed from sediment cores, fossils and ancient DNA”. The overall aim of the project is to understand the ecosystem and evolutionary history of Lake Victoria, East Africa. The goals for the postdoc are to help synthesize the results from the project by integrating and interpreting diverse time series that include multiple biogeochemistry proxies along with organismal remains (e.g. zooplankton and fish teeth). This unique data set has been developed over the past 5 years by a large team of researchers, and is based on a series of sediment cores that provide a unique historical record of ecosystem dynamics of Lake Victoria spanning the entire Holocene – a time period that includes not only the emergence of a dramatic radiation of cichlid fish but also the more recent human-mediated ecosystem degradation that culminated in a mass extinction of cichlids and a thoroughly changed food web.

We are interested in candidates with expertise in quantitative data analysis and an interest in the paleolimnology of tropical lakes. The team of researchers involved in the project includes paleolimnologists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists. The main data sources that support the proposed work have been generated and are ready for synthesis. Additionally developing own ideas within the framework of the project is encouraged.

The position is based at Eawag’s Center for Ecology, Evolution & Biogeochemistry (CEEB), which is located on the shores of Lake Lucerne and is a strong nucleus of research groups aimed at integrating evolutionary biology, community ecology, and ecosystem science http://www.eawag.ch/forschung/cc/ceeb/index_EN. The Postdoc will interact with a diverse range of researchers studying community ecology, evolutionary biology, ecological genetics, ecosystem science, and applied environmental science.

The postdoc project is jointly led by Blake Matthews and Ole Seehausen and involves collaborations with other research groups at Eawag, the University of Bern (Institute of Ecology & Evolution, Institute of Geography), the University of Basel, and the University of Copenhagen.
