We support around 30 breeding programmes, in 12 different countries for 13 different species, including finfish, shrimp and bivalves. Our Breeding Programme Managers are the front line of everything we do at Xelect. With an expert team of biologists, geneticists, laboratory staff and bioinformaticians behind you, you will lead the genetics programmes for our customers, working directly with them to design, implement and develop their broodstock programme.

Our sector and company is growing fast, as we take on new customers all around the world, developing selective breeding programmes for new and established species, using the latest technologies. For our customers, working with you will be like having access to their own in-house genetics team, and you will work closely with them to design, deliver and optimize their selective breeding programmes.

The life of a Programme Manager 
The role is extremely varied, challenging and rewarding. Key aspects of the role include: 
  •  Design, co-ordinate and implement new genetics programmes that deliver significant commercial returns for our customers' businesses. 
  •  Regularly visit our customers, developing strong personal relationships and getting a deep understanding of their production conditions and commercial goals. 
  • Manage the day-to-day running of our programmes, co-ordinating the necessary internal resources and acting as a virtual member of our customers' teams. Handle large datasets and work with our in-house customer databases. 
  • Perform and deliver the necessary phenotyping and selective breeding analyses using our in-house selection and simulation software. 
  • Liaise with our in-house specialist genetics laboratory to ensure that projects are delivered on time, on budget and to optimise the genetic tools required for your programmes. 
  •  Provide hands on consultancy and support to our customers at key times in their breeding programme.
You'll be backed by a highly qualified multidisciplinary technical team of aquaculture experts, quantitative geneticists, bioinformaticians, software developers, molecular biologists and a strong commercial team. Our headquarters are in the medieval university town of St Andrews on the East coast of Scotland. We have a modern office building and a dedicated laboratory with three Illumina DNA sequencing machines. We have developed industry-leading genetic and bioinformatic pipelines including advanced mate selection software and new technologies for genomic selection. We work closely with several leading academic institutions, including the world-leading Roslin Institute.

Your skillsets
Our programme managers are highly experienced, adaptable individuals, who can develop and manage advanced breeding programmes, work well under pressure and have fantastic communications skills. Your skills and qualifications will include:
  • A minimum of a MSc relating to aquaculture, quantitative genetics, finfish/shellfish reproduction or animal breeding
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Knowledge and experience of hatchery and broodstock management, including aquaculture operations more widely for finfish and / or shellfish species
  • A practical understanding of the application of genetics within selective breeding
  • Excellent data management and computer literacy skills
  • High levels of motivation and a collaborative mindset, with a desire to constantly improve our service
  • Willingness to travel to other countries and experience new cultures
  • Knowledge of statistics and programming platforms.
Additional desirable skills include:
  • Proficiency with programming platforms such R or Linux
  • A PhD relating to aquaculture, fish reproduction or animal breeding
  • Advanced statistical skills including multivariate analysis
  • Proficiency in other languages
  • Peer-reviewed publications in relevant fields.

The holders of these positions will work on research questions related to my NSERC Discovery Grant research program. This means research topics can be very flexible, and there will be lots of opportunities for students to pursue their own interests. We can accommodate broad interests across taxonomic groups. Depending on research interests we can focus on gaining skills and knowledge in any one or a combination of ecological, evolutionary, and population genetic/genomic research fields. These can be approached both applied and basic research directions. Research will be primarily computer-based and we will provide all the training needed for a successful research project. 

Our general research aim is to build an understanding of the causes and patterning of biodiversity at the genetic level and to link genetic diversity to other levels of biodiversity. Genetic diversity is the foundation of biodiversity—it underlies population persistence, the capacity to adapt to environmental change, and, ultimately, ecosystem stability and resilience. Genetic diversity is also particularly vulnerable to human activities that degrade environments. Despite underlying all higher levels of biodiversity, the patterns and causes of variation in genetic diversity across species are largely unknown. Filling this knowledge gap will help us build our fundamental understanding of how biodiversity is generated and is critical for conservation. 

Our approach to this work has come to be called ‘macrogenetics’. Macrogenetics encompasses population genetic research that repurposes genetic data, whether collected from the literature or harvested raw data, to address new questions about the ecological and evolutionary causes and consequences of genetic variation across multiple species. The term macrogenetics is new, but the approach is old. However, interest in the area is growing due to the accumulation of publicly archived genetic data. The group has amassed a very large data set, so students can hit the ground running with data. But we will also expect students to expand the database in line with their own research questions and taxonomic interests.

Diversidad genética de artrópodos beneficiosos para la agricultura: puesto de investigación enfocado en modelización

Research Fellow - Unravelling the role of genetic variation of beneficial arthropods in agroecosystems.

Duration: 3.5 years.

An enthusiastic, motivated, and creative postdoctoral Research Fellow is sought to join a collaborative team within the School of Biological Sciences to develop predictive process-based models on the effects of climate and land-use change on arthropods' genetic diversity and persistence in agro-ecosystems.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in theoretical evolution and/or ecology, strong programming skills, strong interest/knowledge of population genetics and interest in applying those skills to improve understanding and forecasting of species' responses to anthropogenic changes. The fellow will join Dr Greta Bocedi's team and a wider strong team of PIs, postdocs and postgraduate students developing and applying the RangeShifter platform (led by Dr Greta Bocedi, Prof Justin Travis and Prof Damaris Zurell at the University of Potsdam, in collaboration with Dr Lesley Lancaster), who are embedded within a global collaborative network that will maximize both the impact of the work and the advancement opportunities to the postdoctoral researcher. Further, the fellow will be part of the Centre of Ecological Genetics, an international collaboration between PIs from universities in Aarhus (DK), Helsinki (FI) and Aberdeen (UK), with Aberdeen leading the modelling component. The centre's research spans several topics in ecological and evolutionary research using molecular methods and statistical and process-based modelling.

Trabaja en los proyectos de conservación genética del zoológico de Edimburgo

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's WildGenes team are looking for a Research Assistant. Based at Edinburgh Zoo, the team uses genetic data to inform the conservation of 10-15 species annually. This role will involve supporting our research scientists in the analysis of genetic datasets. You will also be required to deliver towards reports for our conservation partners and input into project discussions at various stages. A key focus will be a project informing giraffe translocations in Uganda but RZSS has an aim to aid in the restoration of 50 species by 2030, so there are other project opportunities. You will be expected to work closely with the analysis team but also alongside our onsite genetics lab team that generates the datasets and our biobank that provides long-term preservation of genetic material. It is a full-time 3-year fixed term role working 37.5 hours per week.

Who we are looking for
The successful candidate will hold an MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline plus job experience in a relevant role. Ideally, they will have experience in the bioinformatic analysis of genetic datasets but also of knowledge of standard molecular genetic laboratory techniques and the preservation of DNA. They will also have excellent communication skills for working with project partners including those in the university, zoo and conservation sectors.

Salary
The position sits within Band D (£25,834 - £30,286 Per Annum)

Post-doc position in the project:BIOdiversity PAtternS and Scale: the case of peracarid Crustacea from
south‑eastern Australia (BIOPASS)


A postdoctoral position is available in the Marine Biology Research group at Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz.

Project:
The main objective of the project addresses the lack of fundamental knowledge about biological diversity patterns in the benthic marine ecosystems off the south-eastern Australian coast. This project  is an interactive approach that focuses on identification and assessing local diversity of peracarids (Tanaidacea and Isopoda) from SE Australia to point the environmental factors shaping the diversity over latitudinal and bathymetric gradients.

The project is held in University of Lodz (Poland) and forms a close collaboration with the University of Valencia (Spain) and Melbourne Museum (Australia).

Candidate:
The postdoc is expected to apply methods for species delimitation (genetic/ genomic) and testing connectivity among populations of peracarids crustaceans from SE Australia, NW and Central Pacific, N Atlantic. The obtained data are supposed to be interpreted with taxonomical findings (cooperation with taxonomists) to draw the general model of distribution (cooperation with ecologists). Finally, the genetic results will be employed to investigate phylogeny and phylogeography of the most diverse taxa (families/genera).

We seek an enthusiastic candidate with good communication skills, experience in genetics, systematic, and phylogenetics. We are looking for geneticist who is fascinated by crustaceans or taxonomist ready to work with small crustaceans and will to learn genetic.

The candidate is expected to work both independently and as part of a large research team, and may supervise technical staff and students.

The candidate should have: Minimum PhD in biology, genetics or ecology obtained in between 2015 (and 2022)

The position is fully funded. It will be initially for 1 year, but funding available to extend it further.

Postdoc en genética de la conservación en Sudáfrica

The University of the Free State (UFS, South Africa) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Genetics. Candidates with a proved track record in Conservation Genetics, with a research interest in Conservation Genomics, are encouraged to apply. Current research in the unit is focussed on hybridization, diversity in fragmented populations and geographic patterns of genetic diversity (and the associated adaptive significance of these processes). Species of interest include ungulates, mussels and zebrafish.

The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants' academic achievements, publication outputs and research potential, as well as the relevance of prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to three years subject to satisfactory performance.

Eligibility criteria: The fellowship is open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the UFS. Graduated with a PhD degree in a relevant discipline within the last five years Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS for the duration of the fellowship. This is a residential fellowship: the successful applicant is required to spend 80% of her/his postdoctoral period at the UFS.

The successful candidate will be required to: 
  • Conduct innovative research in Conservation Genetics / Genomics. Research area should be closely aligned with current focus areas and taxa of interest in the research group. The candidate will also be required to devote a portion of research time (~25%) to projects using the zebrafish facility in the Department.
  • Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET- accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books. The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.
  • Initiate projects and seek funding for them.
  • Provide assistance to students and staff in the Department in the analysis of Genomic data.
  • Register and reside as postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research.

Department of Biological Sciences, University of Arkansas. Research interests in the Zhuang Lab include: Genetic basis of variation for complex traits and diseases; Evolution of genetic novelty and diversity; Molecular mechanisms of gene formation and gene loss. Investigations involve comparative genomics, molecular evolution, quantitative genetics, and bioinformatics, in model (fruit flies) and non-model organisms (polar fishes).

Job Description
As a lab manager, the candidate will assist the PI to set up a new lab and support the laboratory research requirements of the lab, including new equipment ordering and testing, protocol development, equipment maintenance, supply stock ordering, and basic administrative duties. As a research assistant, the candidate will assist the PI with conducting fruit fly experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and be responsible for maintaining fly stocks. The candidate will work directly with the PI and will have opportunities to participate in research seminars; attend conferences; collaborate on publications; and supervise undergraduate researchers. The position offers excellent benefits and a friendly working environment. The research assistant will be appointed for a one-year term, with reappointment possible based on performance and funding availability.

Minimum Requirements
  • B.S. or M.S. in Biology or related fields.
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated excellence in organization, attention to detail, and keeping thorough and up-to-date records.
  • Ability to manage several tasks, keeping all on track and organized.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience being a lab manager, or setting up new lab with PI.
  • Experience working with fruit fly or fish.
  • Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment, and using Python, R, etc.
  • Molecular biology lab skills and genomic data analyzing experience.
